Saw this on Bikerumour. Good old UCI  nothing like stiffling R&D to knacker everone.

Not everyone, more like Team GB ;-)

On the track they are one of the few teams with 100% custom made bikes. Others such as Holland ride, as you'd expect, Koga whereas France and many more ride Look. I've read somewhere that this is aimed at clipping Team GBs runaway technical success thereby introducing a more level playing field.

I agree that the ban on the pro being a test bed for new kit is very short sighted. It has been proven in Formula 1 that this kind of tricle down R & D is a success in the long term. The UCI in seeking to apply existing regulations have made a serious error here.

S.

As you say it's trickle down not just GBs track team. If the manufacturers have to use existing kit that's for sale in the high street as has been mooted then I think there'll be less development. They use the pro teams to test the equipment to find out if it works, if you can't use them, how do you do the proper testing in a convenient manner. Also if they don't get R&D results from a team then the reason to sponsor them goes for a lot.

I don't think the words GOOD and UCI go together in the same sentence

Rather like the F1 teams have done with the FIA, all the major bike & component manufacturers should get together and tell the UCI where to stick their technical regulations. They should demand that new tech regs are drawn up by a committee made up substantially of the manufacturers, or they withdraw sponsorship from all UCI pro teams.

This is all great stuff for diverting attention away from other areas of the sport though, ay, Marco!?

I asked Chris Boardman what he thought about all this, apparent stifling of innovation. He gave a great reply.

I'll tell you what he told me next time I log on...

Rebadge the track bikes as Boardman's and flog 'em at Halfords. You just have to have a shed load of cash and be prepared to wait up to 5 years for delivery if you want to buy one. If they just have to be for sale in a shop then it doesn't mean you have to make money out of them, or actually sell one, just make them available.

His view was....rule changes, bring it on. You change 'em, we'll adapt and still do all we can to beat everybody else.

Which is what you'd expect from the man who set the hour record, only to see it subsequently put in the bin by the UCI, and then set it again under their new rules.
