Arrrr, I meant I'll have to keep pedal to the metal to keep up on an mtb, though I'm hoping for a nice steady/slow  pace.....me hearties

If the weather is good, I hope to make it. Anybody got any recommendations for front lights ?

You only need lights on the way down, and only full beam needed at the front

Steady, not slow.

For lights you want something good as the night just swallows the illumination once you're out of town and you might find things come up on you as a bit of a surprise. What do you currently have? Stick 'em all on your handlebars and then just roll round the corner to an unlit road away from any residual street lighting seeping through. You'll soon find out which ones actually light the road and allow you to see where you're going, remember there's some dark descending too. Otherwise you might find it hard going with bumps etc in the road surprising you and having to concentrate so hard following others lights.

I'll be carrot-loading all next week to improve my night vision.

technically the amount of carrots you would need to eat to notice any difference in nightvision would be enough to kill you.

Yes, carrots in excessive quantities can be fatal.

That was my tactic. :)

I am well up for this ride now, couldn't do it last year because of the odd broken bone!

Cheers, Marky Mark

Sounds like fun. :D

I can't make the clubrun next week or the Old ports ride so I hope I can do this one instead.

What time do you think we'll be back in Coulsdon on the return leg?

I'm considering this, like Andrew, I'll be on my tourer with guards and dynamo if I come so I think 45 minutes from CSS to Rusper in the dark after a long day's work will be a no no for me.

Well spotted Tim. 45 minutes does seem a bit ambitious. I'd have thought an hour would be nearer the mark.

Might have to fit in a small nap, just to recharge the batteries!

May take an hour to get to Rusper but not a problem as I'll call Paul on the way to give him an ETA as he only lives round the corner from Rusper.

Nothing's changed from the original ride though  .

Blue Peter Version:
If you don't know that you'll be happy with your lights' illumination descending at say 25mph on an unlit lane, then test them. If they don't provide enough light then buy/borrow some that do. As a general rule dynamo or rechargables will be okay, clip-on lights that are okay for commuting won't be good enough.

Pace will be reasonable which for night will be about 17s to Brighton, use any bike you like if you can ride it to Brighton at night at that speed. Speed as always is only a guide to effort though not an exact, it depends what the wind's like.
