Thank You and Good Night

Postby Snoop Doug » Mon Jul 13, 2009 10:18 am

Folks

I've decided to back away from helper coordination duties with immediate effect. I will drop a note to promoters with names already in the frame for upcoming events and ask you to take it from there, sorry for any inconvenience.

No doubt a lot of you will be delighted to hear that there will be no more emails, posts, anything from me asking you to honour your commitments to this lovely club.

To those of you that help out without even having to be asked, I say thanks. You know who you are and you're great. For a while at least you made me believe that it was possible to get this thing right. The sport is so much better off thanks to you.

To those who help out when they feel the heat, I say thanks, and please don't wait to be asked next time.

To those who won't help, who stare at their shoes, who don't reply, who think it's OK to ignore the call to action, OK to let someone else support the sport....well I'll leave my thoughts about what we should do with you lot in my head - trust me it ain't pretty.

I don't blame you Snoop, must be frustrating when half the club sods off to Mallorca when the most laborious event of the season is to be promoted...

Cheers Dominic, it was almost fun for a while but this year, the last couple of months in particular have been like pulling teeth. I've never known so many shirkers among such an otherwise active group - it's astounding. In fact it's embarrassing  well it is to me.

Adam - that was just an accident of planning, nothing more nothing less. I thought we put on a great RR this year and though I wasn't officially helping on the day I enjoyed being a part of the ACC family. And that's the bit I don't get. There is something quite satisfying about putting something back into a sport we enjoy, and yet so many people who all have/make the time to ride can't/won't give just a teeny slice of that over to helping the sport thrive.

Weird...or should that be selfish?

I wonder if that is it Snoop, because the majority of the club don't partake in the sport side of it, they don't realise what it takes to put an event on

I think a lot of members are "new" to cycling so don't know the history of cycling clubs and how they operate. I suggested we put a short paragraph on the membership application with a brief outline of what ACC is and what is involved in being a member of a cycling club. It's not Addiscombe it's the same for any club.

Forgot to say thanks for all the work you did on it, a nasty task to try and smooth the path a bit and you just run in to a wall, a real shame.

Further to what I said above that was only an idea to show the point up front - point of sale as it were. I don't think there's any excuse for not knowing or failing to help out.
- One morning/evening/day in a year is not a lot to ask.
- It is well known through the forum/CR etc when volunteers are required.
- Decisions along the lines of the volunteer/marshal commitment are open to every club member for comment, discussion, or disagreement at the AGM. This is also well advertised and has hardly anyone turn up.

I see nothing to be proud of in the size of the club membership or club run attendee numbers when we struggle for helpers to put on and support events which clubs a fraction of the size do year in year out.

This club is going to miss you, and they have no idea how much yet.

Good luck in your ventures and hope to see you out and about soon.
