Gentle ride on Tuesday, anyone?

Postby Roy Green » Sun Jul 12, 2009 10:04 pm

I'm planning a morning ride on Tuesday - weather permitting (forecast so far seems OK). I'm in the J4F or 15s clubruns league; anyone a bit quicker welcome too, provided they weren't too eager to gallop off!
I live near Selsdon so reckon a 9.30 depart from Geoffrey Butler's shop would suit most OK, or from nearer here if living out this way. Figuring on heading for the nice lanes around Edenbridge-Lingfield way. Anyone free?

Hmmmm

I'm just back from a particularly large all day breakfast, I think I need to do some exercise.

D'you think a lardy chosser like me on his slick tyred mtb could keep up  ? Sounds like fun, I'll be there unless it's peeing down

Anyone can keep up with me uphill, Snoop! Aim at about a 3 hour ride Rob, but quite flexible, we can consult.

Thanks Roy for arranging this impromptu ride. Joined by Snoop and Peter for a pleasantly paced ride out towards Edenbridge – Lingfield and back via Westerham. The first half of the ride we got caught in a long downpour, but this didn’t dampen our spirits and by the time we got to the Kent side (I think) the sun was shining and the spirits lifted. Great company and apologies to Roy and Snoop for not saying goodbye, but I had to shoot off pretty sharpish.

What a nice ride, albeit a rather soggy one.
As well as Snoop and Rob Q, Pete joined us. As he lives in Caterham and works in Edenbridge, his road knowledge proved a boon. Especially the parallel quiet road to the grotty A22 bit to Caterham Bypass, then the lane round by Woldingham School, to take us a more pleasant route through Godstone.
We picked up quiet lanes again soon after, going through to Lingfield, thence Edenbridge. Sting in the tail came when we hit Toys Hill, en route for Sundridge. Switchbacking to and fro to maintain some momentum just about got me over this monster! Then to the pleasant Tudor Cafe on Westerham Green, and back via the Botley Hill-Titsey top roundabout road. Overall, a very pleasant route, much quieter and rather hillier than the usual clubrun one.
Weather had threatened showers — it thrashed down for the first hour! Riding in a rain top on a warm day makes you feel like a boiled pudding. When we got to Lingfield, and into Kent, the roads were bone dry!
Thanks for the company, lads, must do it again before long. :) :) :) Roy

Thanks Roy for organising and apologies for not saying goodbye, As Rob said, he needed to get home Pdq so we went the most direct route home.
The ride out all the way until the outskirts of Lingfield was a pretty soden affair but we all kept our spirits up amongst good company. Once at Lingfield it all dried up with the sun even trying to make an appearance, On to Edenbridge Roy said something about a cafe stop in Westerham and I duly proceeded to direct everyone on a slight detour up Toys Hill. Anyway after duly being thanked for the climb we proceeded to the cafe where we all had a much welcome bite to eat.
Afterwards Rob and myself left pretty sharpish up Clarks Lane, through Woldingham and home.
Once again thanks to Roy Doug and Rob for an enjoyable ride.

I think that Toys climb was more a matter of 'OOW, OOH' than 'WOO HOO', Snoop!
Great piece on your blog — do read it, folks, it neatly sums up what bike riding is all about. :D

[quote="Snoop"]This countryside is like a jigsaw, they all know bits of it and it fits together quite beautifully.

Nice turn of phrase.

It's always sunnier in Kent  .

I feel you let yourselves down by visiting the Tudor Tea rooms and not having one of the English puds with custard, make sure it doesn't happen again.

Well done to the old man, I'll be happy if I can ride up Toy's Hill without stopping when I'm that old :P .
