Sunday Ride - 26th July

Postby Snoop Doug » Wed Jul 22, 2009 12:15 pm

drum roll puhlease...

I'm going to ride out to Kent from Tesco Purley this Sunday. Departure time will be 09.45 and I will follow the fantastic route a few of us took t'other Tuesday (as much as I can remember it). Heads out towards Woldingham, Godstone, Lingfield, Marsh Green, Edenbridge, Four Elms...The pace will be steady/leisurely as I'll be on my mtb/chieftain tank. Most of the route is flattish but we will go up Toys Hill for a laugh  . There will be a cafe stop in Westerham (assuming there's somewhere open so maybe bring a little something to keep you going just in case).

I hope to make this a regular ACC feature (the ride, not necessarily the route) over the summer and beyond. Like all I shan't be available every Sunday (and I'm a crap regular ride leader due to my current slow pace anyway) but it would be great if we could get a regular Sunday club ride going. I hope you agree and hope to see a few friendly faces on Sunday.

Cheers - Snoop

Loads of cafes in Weterham Snoop and they'll be open. I've often stopped at the Tudor Tea Rooms (one at the top of the green which I believe you went to last time) on a Sunday for a bit of crumble and custard to get me over the hill to the homestead.

A nice variation to going over Toys is left at Four Elms up Pootings and then right which takes you on a more gradual climb up past Chartwell and then joins (turn right at the end) Hosey Common for the drop in to Westerham. It's rather a nice scenic road. More gradual climb but with a couple of nasty kicks.

Will hopefully join you later on in the summer. I seem to have found myself riding some 100 mile TT on this Sunday

Woop Woop - Sunday club rides rock!!

Ben and I slayed the mighty headwind from Purley out to Little Switzerland. We took marco's route which has some good lumps n bumps to contend with. We used our awesome collective maintenance skills to discuss what might be making my bike squeak. We couldn't figure it out but hey. Ben nearly lost his ubercool designer newspaper gilet but we recovered it. Phew!

Good tootle up Box Hill debating the doping situation. Stopped @ top to get breath back then on to Walton. Stopped @ caff. Tea, cappucino and bacon sarnies. Yum. Good conversation about the vapour like nature of the credit card business  and other cool stuff then we headed for home.

On way out of Walton there came an angry horn honk. Ben quickly dropped into single file and this silver grey Range Rover roared by. Dangerously close. We gave the doofus a friendly wave. He jammed on the brakes and got out, fuming. This dude was up for a fight, he was a delightful shade of exploding purple. We were accused of saying something....."what did you effing call me?" style. We'd uttered not a word. Nutbar got back in his car and tried to follow us down the road. We decided we didn't really want this butter behind us so we looked to turn off. We stopped and he repeated his act of lunacy. Jammed to a halt, stuff the other traffic and he's back out of the car threatening us again. He was a big dude and he was sooooo mad I think he would've tried to wtick one on us if he could've got near enough. We retreated. He sat fuming for a few more seconds then drove on. I feel sorry for people with such a limited, nasty emotional spectrum. We had a laugh about it as we rode the tailwind back home. We both agreed, it was a good job he didn't make contact, in every sense.

Parted company in Coulsdon. Good ride, good weather, great company, thanks Ben.

I can't make the next couple of Sundays but I'll see about doing another of these real soon. Might take a different, nutcase free route next time tho.
