club run 1 Aug

Well, I'd been feeling rough all week, stiff neck, tired and headachey, so I thought I'd take it easy with the 17s....

I took it easy all right - gentle ride from Hooley back to GBs with a broken spoke - my wheel was so out of true it rubbed against the rear stay

Thanks to those who stopped and sorted out the broken spoke, especially whoever it was who gave me a piece of tape from their handlebars to tie the spoke to its neighbour.

All sorted out now with a new spoke in which cost me £20  oh and £36 for a jacket which was half price from £80 with ACC discount

PS anyone lose a Specialized lock just down from CSS?

Bad luck Amy. Expensive spoke, I think they've standardised workshop costs recently - which means they've gone up and you don't get a better deal as an Addiscombe member as it's non-discountable.

First CR for me for many moons with a race free weekend, nice to catch up with so many folk I haven't seen for ages.

Had a spin out with an 18s which seemed fairly good and uneventful most of the way. However from Rusper on there was some dreadful riding which was a very bad reflection on the club and dangerous. I won't drag out details but quite why it was deemed necessary to ride all over the road and 3,4, and more abreast just because the road goes downhill is a mystery to me.

After that approaching the cafe people got excited over the sprint and went way too early, pulling wide, 4 and 5 abreast on the road and in the right hand lane, then tired and slowed noticeably in the approach to the sign.

Remember this is a CR folks. If you want to race then race, that's not saying the CR can't be used for a training ride and a good workout as well as some fun, but whichever way you look at it some of the riding at the end was stupid. I'm not a natural schoolmaster type but still shouted myself hoarse at the end.

After the sillyness a nice chat with Joyce and Jim at the cafe and then a Redhill return. Went a bit more vigorously on the way back and clung on to Keith's wheel up the church climb to the top where I waved Adam passed and I dropped back a bit on the bit across the top to the descent as I didn't fancy getting out the saddle to hang on the last bit. Chewed my handlebar tape and shadowed Steve and Keith up the Merstham drag, thanks for the tow chaps, and also not kicking up the speed again towards the top as I think I'd have dropped off if you had. Said ta ta to Keith as he head for the homestead and 2-uped a bit with Steve down towards Coulsdon, shame we had to stop for the lights.

Fingers crossed for sun at the Palace tomorrow and I'll see folk there with my green is the new black, or is it the other way round?

Told you you should have come out with the 19's Andrew, our ride sounds like the exact opposite to yours, everyone well behaved and riding sensibly. I was feeling a bit ropey after a week of very little sleep due to getting up at stupid o'clock to go fishing every day last week whilst on my parents boat up in Cheshire, what with that and being sat on my bottom 90% of the time and not going within 200 miles of my bike my legs felt really stiff. Add to that what feels like a cold starting then its safe to say I suffered a little, mainly my legs though. Luckily the pace was pretty even all through the ride and the thru and off was nice and smooth.

What with my legs being in poor shape I didn't feel like going flat out for the sprint esp when faced with the prospect of being up against The Shadow and Adam so agreed I'd give them a lead out. I hit the front on the last straight going past Gatwick and wound the pace up to 30+ mph round the bends and just used every last bit of energy I had in my legs to keep up the speed. Coming round the last bend before the straight to the sign I flicked my elbow, job done I pulled out the way and watched Steve and Adam battle it out with Steve just about taking the honours. Was thanked for my hard work which I have to confess I did enjoy, makes a nice change from sprinting.

BH route home, suffered on the way back as my legs really began to fall off.....till I got on to the 217 then picked up the pace...and more...and more and TT'd the last 4 miles home on my own averaging 27mph, work that one out though, its as though my legs suddenly decieded to wake up and start working....a bit to late in the day though.

Weather stayed dry thankfully to make it an enjoyable if not painfull ride at times. :D
