What's the write-up on Ambrosio hubs? Any other good recommendations for 28 hole spokes?

May do front radial after I realised that both Enigma and blue Roberts have radial front wheels.

I shall, of course, bear in mind the advice from both my longtime mechanic and potential wheel builder and go for what I want :D

Ambrosio hubs on my fixed and they are very smooth, however I haven't had a rear freehub Ambrosio so can't comment on them.

Be careful with your hub selection if you do that, as some manufacturers say the warranty is invalidated if the hub is laced with radial spokes.

Also a radial front with a crossed rear will mean having 3 different tengths of spoke to worry about. The same pattern front and rear will mean only having 1 or two at the most spoke lengths to remember or keep as spares.

Ummm, so far up for consideration and pricing

Ambrosio rims

hubs - Hope

front 28 spoke - maybe one cross (I don't think Hope does radial)

rear 28 spoke - maybe same as front

spokes - lightest DT or Sapim

Anything else?

Btw, I have Hope hubs on my mtb and they are great. Very smooth and "ticky" and need minimal maintenance, even after 4 years' use.

If you are going handbuilt, the bloke at GBs is very very good. My original roadbike had Ambrosio Elites laced to 32 hole RX100 Shimano hubs and a sticker saying handbuilt by Pete Wise of GB. Strong as anything and extremely spinny. I only went factory this time for the weight.

Not being a wheelbuilder I don't know the merits or different nipple materials - Grahame?

Brass nipples look better though which I think it an important consideration 8) .

I have been trying not to say this but.... sounds painful :shock:

Having beaten out the basics I will discuss the finer details with my consultant wheelbuilder :D

As Sheldon said. Plus Aluminium Alloy has no fatigue life, and doesn't roll into smooth or particularly strong threads.

The upshot is - aluminium nipples need replacing about every two years. The weight saving is about 20g per wheel (the difference between breathing in heavily and lightly is estimated at approximately 50g), so one splash of mud will negate any difference.

Brass is the way to go.
