I'm up for this (if you reckon my aging bike can handle it!).

Any tips on getting to "the bus shelter thing in Penshurst village" without a car?

Just spotted the original post said "Penshurst". Note this rides start in "Peaslake" in Surrey not "Penhurst" in Kent. I'll correct the first post

See Marco's map link above for the location, if you are coming from the A25 the Peaslake village sign is about a mile before the meeting place.

You can ride from Dorking station about 7-8 lumpy miles (45-60mins) or from Gomshall station about 2 miles. I will be on a train arriving at Dorking at 9.32, if you want to meet up then.

Thanks. The Sunday timetable has made the decision for me - no usable connection to Gomshall so I'll also get the train to arrive in Dorking at 0932. See you there.

It's about 60-70 mins I guess, by mtb on tarmac, CSS to Dorking, and then 45mins more to Peaslake. It would make it a long day. Let me know if you coming.

I'll second that. After a quick warm-up on Barry knows best, we met Marco and Joel who showed us around some of the trails.

Much respect also to Colin who managed some hairy rooty trails on his 90's style rigid MTB with commuting tyres.

New word I learnt today, "hucking", wheelie off drop.

Europa Oil & Gas has submitted a planning application to explore for Oil & Gas on Leith Hill. Full details are available here. If you live in Dorking, you might like to know that this will lead to 30+ HGVs a day via Knoll Road.

Thanks. The logging and deforestation was bad enough.

So where is the fuel which I put into my car so I can drive to Leith Hill suppose to come from then ?

I doubt whether drilling for oil in Bury Hill Wood will cause any significant inconvenience. After all, the existing gas and oil fields in Surrey/North Downs haven't.

In fact, how many people are even aware that there has been an operating gas field in Bletchingley since 1965 ?
Or an operating oil field in Oxted for about the last 18 years ?

There are 144 production wells in Southern England pumping out thousands of barrels of oil every day. And there are another 157 exploration wells. Many are in the the Hampshire/Surrey Weald Basin. None of them appear to be causing me any problems.

Will the 30+ HGVs a day cause inconvenience ? Well I bet it was inconvenient for the Iraqis to have their country, bombed, attacked, and invaded - all to satisfy our desperate thirst for oil........ I suspect a 20 tonne Challenger tank hurtling down your street is a tad inconvenient :|

Or is it OK to screw up someone else's country just so we can go around admiring the scenic views in ours, as we drive our cars to the trails where we engage in our over-indulgent, ridiculously expensive hobby, which most Iraqis can only dream about ? ...... when they're not dreaming about having electricity and running water.
