Got secure parking at work now so rode in today. 20 miles to canary wharf at ave 17.3 mph excluding stoppage time (red lights, I stopped at every one). Slightly off form as been off bike for 3 weeks - on hols slobbing by pool drinking beer. Only bad bit is last 3 miles directly into the sun.

Wrong diagram?? What was he doing reading a map? It's a train! They go on rails for God's sake. What was he looking for? A short cut? Jeez! Just watch the pretty lights, press stop or go and open and shut the doors. Oh, and the randomly moving things that get on and off, they're called passengers.

Yes, but think about it. They don't ALL stop at ALL the stations so the driver does need to know the stops on that particular service, so he does need a service card, and probably carries several for any particular route.
My son drives a train so I asked him.!!

Does anyone else think there was a complete non sequitur between Dombo's original post and Sean's reply and consequent posts??

??? How come, the train journey was a part of my 2 hour frigging commute! 4 hour round trip!

Ah, now that we know that it does help explain things. Of course not knowing that you've moved from Penge and my psychic abilities not quite up to scratch...

Sequituring back to my original post, what struck me most of all on my commute was our absolutely appalling roads. Just got back from Tunisia where the roads are glassy smooth, no potholes, cracks, random infills by cable/pipe layers. Main roads, back streets, urban thoroughfares and country lanes; all would be a pleasure to ride on compared to ours.

I had the complete opposite in Spain (Costa de Sol). Although I only rode 2 miles to the local shop for some bread and milk, the roads near the village of Benalmadena were horrendous. Pot holes the size of craters and infill’s that quite frankly were laughable. Off to France for my London to Paris charity ride, so looking forward to the smooth roads in France.

Is it a fairly flat run in Dombo as that's a pretty good average for a commute with the traffic and junction stops. After the nice, but hilly, part of my commute I go through Camberwell and along the Walworth Road which has tons of sets of lights and is normally a real stop start affair.
The road surface on mine is okay until the Elephant and Castle, after that and through borough to London Bridge is terrible. They've resurfaced a small section recently but the whole thing needs re-doing, trouble is work on that section of road would cause chaos.
Tuesday was a good one for me this week, I'd taken the decent bike as I'd intended to do Palace but on the way home for some reason I just didn't fancy it. Don't know why but the sky was a lovely liquid blue in the distance so I just went straight on and had a blast round the Kent lanes for an hour or so instead :D . Apart from the free miles I like the ride home as a good way to end the day and if mood and weather suggest it then a nice extension tagged on is a great way to blow out any cobwebs from the office.

It's a false downhill to Thornton Heath along the A23 as far as I can tell, and with a tail wind I was averaging 23-24 by GBs after which the lights and traffic came into play. Only annoying bit was the pedals - Keos aren't meant for in/out clipping - but my track standing is getting better.
Carbon soles and cleats don't mix with marble floors either. Crossing the foyer I sounded like a gaggle of Essex girls clippety-cloppetying across Stansted concourse on their way back from a hen week in Fuengirola.

I've got a new commute which has upped my distance from 4.73 miles to someone around 10 (not measured it exactly yet)

It out to the west of London so flows much better (previously I headed in to the centre of town)

I'm working out a few routes and one of them takes me along one side of Richmond Park (up Sawyers Hill) which is quite nice to do first thing in morning.

And then as I drop down to Richmond Bridge there are some good fast corners and I reckon I'll enjoy experimenting with the optimum way to ride them over the coming months (or fall off and hurt myself  )

There's also another corner as I swing round past Twickenham Stadium which I'm riding really badly at the moment but in time I should get sorted

I'd guess that my average speed is reasonably decent - I'll measure it next week and report back

Most days I just spin in, still got a day's work ahead of me after all and Monday's nearly always a very gentle recovery spin in after a race on Sunday, vary the effort on the way home depending on my mood.
