Training with Keith

Ouch, that hurt. Made an arrangement to meet up with Keith to do a few hills today. As we headed out towards Lingfield I knew that I was in for a beating when Keith starting showing off his new bike position and his fancy hat new shoes. He did this showing off by pulling back his ears and whipping his bike up to around 50km per hour on the flat. Uh oh, alarm bells start ringing in my ears, this is gonna be a quick one.

Once over the little lump into Lingfield we spot a group of familiar looking faces in orange, white and black, its the TSN crew with Gavin leading the way. Keith and I cannot resist the grasp of a little group to chat to, truth being that I was scared to be left in the lone company of Keith at the fear that he would leave me a quivering wreck in some far off country village.

Gav and I pushed into the wind and we were soon on the Newchapel handicap circuit. Gavin then threw down the gauntlet for us to up the pace a bit chaps. Well talk about waving a red flag, Keith and I kindly obliged and sprinted the small hill, Gavin came with us and then popped through on his shiny steed and off he went. We soon hunted him down and now there were just the 3 of us. We did a smoothish through and off at some ridiculous pace and half way around the 2nd lap Gavin seemed to disappear, taking the advice of the name of his bike 'soloist'. Keith and I hammered around a bit longer before I put up the white flag and we waited for the others.

Keith and I peeled off and then raced up the Outwood Windmill climb, Keith putting in a fine Contrador performance of dancing on the pedal whilst I moaned and wheezed myself to the top. We did another loop with an added little bit of a fast section in the middle and then did the hill again, where Keith danced away again. I slogged my way to the top and whilst Keith was getting his breath back I did the dirty and attacked him. Got a good gap and managed to keep it for a fair while until a combine harvester got in my way.

Good little jaunt back where again it felt like I was being drained of every last bit of bodily fluid as Keith decided that we were going to go back at a rate of knots that would make a powerboat proud. Back home, collapsed in a heap with a nice bottle of rego.

All in all a great nights training, nights are getting shorter, need to get the last of these babies in asap.

Cheers

Marek.....

Hey Huw, here's a new area of research you and Cycling Weekly could get into.

All you'd need is an ACC time-trialler with sticky-out ears, a roll of cellotape and a stopwatch.

This is assuming that you've completed you've research into the effect of rider height?

I think this research would be better conducted on the roadies; proper testers already have their sticky-out ears nicely tucked away inside their pointy hat.

Those damn Wurzels get everywhere.
