Flippin' hell, no CR for me again this week (family wedding) and not next week either....my gawd, that'll be no show for 4 weeks! Will try and get a few mid week rides in the week after next, after return from week trip oop north visiting family....

(....recent tales of woe/excuses - baby has cold, baby gives me cold, I give cold back to baby, wrist still sprained from recent bike prang, made redundant last week....oh joy!)

Ride carefully all!

Well that was good. my first CR for six weeks and one of only half a dozen I've ridden all year but boy was it good. Why? well my group of 17s led by Phil Nash and Tim Coles was bl**dy brilliant. Not the usual slowing, speeding up, slowing, braking (after some CRs my hands are sore from constant braking - I kid you not), speeding up, slowing down, braking etc etc.   No, this was SMOOTH, and I mean SMOOOOOOTH!!!. :D :D

Good fast but steady pace, good 'rider discipline', lots of 'talk' - hole left, easy, hole right - the whole ride was an absolute joy.

More please!!!

Jon :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

PS the photos i took in the cafe are posted on the ACC facebook page.

Glad you had it smooth Jon, too many people brake too often and freewheel rather than pedal, particularly in group riding.

 Thought you'd be 1/2 way round a 12hour TT by now?

You've not got your TT bike Wi-Fi'd up have you? It might relieve the monotony?

hi Andrew

What can we do to improve things? can group riding be taught or is it something that is presumed simply comes with experience? -perhaps the VC needs to brief the group especially if there are less experienced riders. How do you stop riders braking and freewheeling??? An undertsanding of the basic principles - not just what you do but why - would I'd have thought been an absolute must to ensure the whole thing works properly. I'd suggest that things are better in the faster more experienced groups so perhaps this is not seen as a problem for the club?

As i say yesterday's ride was a real pleasure - can't always say that of an ACC CR (but don't tell anyone I said this! )

cheers

I don't know about anyone else but I didn't really want to know that, thank you, Sean...

As for club run discipline, it's an old chestnut, usually about speed. I would remind people to read the ACC club run code of conduct (found somewhere in the top bit of the forum) and to remember that it's not just the VCs who are there to keep the ride running smoothly - it's EVERYONE.

Riding in a group does require a different mindset from riding solo - you have to remember that what you do affects everyone around you.

I have been told that I have an advantage when I'm in a group - I can be heard 'squawking away' (thank you whoever said that, I can't remember who) - but apparently having a higher pitched voice it carries more. Most people accuse me of being too quietly spoken and they can't hear me...

John, perhaps you can become a VC - I've got another name to put forward so I'll be happy to suggest you too :D

Jon

As Amy said it can be anyone who shouts out. To be honest I don't like just sitting there shouting like a teacher (no offence  ) but also most people within a fairly short while should and do know this (VCs do say). I think it's just a bit of concentration slip from time to time.

Get 'em all on fixed that will stop the freewheeling 8) . If you want to freewheel you may as well just sit in a chair.

No offence taken, Andrew, it's a well known fact that the main reason teachers become teachers is so that they can shout at and bully little people (no offence, Andrew  ). It's just such great fun. :D

hmmm, anyway joking apart, not sure I was suggesting that anybody shouts at anybody else really - far from it - can't imagine that's a pleasant experience for shouter or shoutee. i think I'd just like the SMOOOOOTH 17mph CR ride I had Saturday to be the norm rather than the exception which I hate to say (because it sounds like I'm being critical) but I think is true.
