ECCA 12 hour 23/8/09

DNF :( .

George, Steve Davies and myself were down to ride this today. Steve was riding off the back of his LEJOG ride with the miles fresh in his legs, George contacted me in the week to say he was going to be a DNS. He'd been feeling below par for a week so a wise decision as a 12hr if not 100% could set you back for months. Me, well with George a DNS if I could finish then I'd take the Club BAR Championship, and I was hoping to do a distance I thought I could do. Last year I had a real downer in the 4 hours of rain at the start and lost a bundle of time there so felt I'd under performed, so this was to be one final go.

I set a schedule for 225 miles which on a sliding speed scale had me starting at about 19.5mph-ish for the first 25. I started quite well, the pedals were turning smoothly and I was rolling along nicely at an average of 20mph :) . I was conscious of not going too hard too early as it's a bit of a long slog but the legs felt good so just kept ticking along.

The first section is horrible. I hate it with a passion and consider it the most dangerous road I've ever ridden on. I've raced on a variety of courses, locations, and commute in to Central London. All of these feel like a gentle spin round the corner compared to this A11/A14 section of road. Even early there was a reasonable amount of traffic and it thunders past at 70mph, at one point a lorry passed so close that the back draft from it threw me over the white line on to the hard shoulder, and this was on a standard road bike and normal wheels. I can see no sense in racing on this, particularly in a 12 hour, and it takes a lot to put me off a road.

Anyway I was going along at a reasonable pace taking extra care passing the alarmingly amount of spearpoint junctions. I knew that the course switched from the A11 to the A14 and then back at some point before the turn. I approached a turn off for the A11 which was like a split in the road, sort of like two straight ons. In TTs if there are no arrows or marshals then you go straight on. There was no sign of a marshal or an arrow so I stayed on the A14 assuming the A11 turn off I needed would be the next one and signed.

Wrong.

I carried on for what seemed like too long but apart from a few more spearpoints joining my road not a lot. There was no sign of any riders coming the other way though which there should have been and I had no-one in front and no-one had passed me. I checked my computer and it confirmed my worst fears as I'd gone too far to still have the turn ahead of me. Thoroughly pissed off I stopped and called my Dad who was on his way out to support me, and in between my volley of swearing confirmed I was a fair way off course :( .

I crossed the DC when I could and started back-tracking in an absolutely foul mood. I started off intending to try and get back on course as once off this sh1t road the lane circuits were nice, but after a few minutes I realised that with with the stop and phone calls by the time I'd have retraced and got back on course I'd have lost about 45 minutes :!: I said earlier that you need to be 100% to do a 12, well that's mentally as well as physically and mentally I was shot now as even if I got back on track okay I'd have lost so much distance (officially as far as the results). I stopped again to call Jon to try and catch him as early as possible before he'd got up the road after his morning TT to support me, and then rode back to where me first feed stop was intended to have been to meet my Dad and pack up the bike and come home.

Okay as a rider it's my responsibility to know the course but I'm not familiar with these roads and can't remember all the details of a 12 hour course, I'd made sure I was okay with the transition sections between the circuits. I gather I was the only rider to go off course, maybe the other riders know the road better than me, maybe I was stupid, whatever the reason I think it was very odd not to have a direction arrow at least at the turn off junction, most TTs even have them at straight over roundabouts. I didn't have a problem with it last year in the rain and poor viability so think they must have had a marshal or arrow there, but it was the National Championship so maybe there was more signage/marshaling.

Wasted money, time, effort. Annoyed but sometimes sh1t happens, not a lot i can do about it now.

A big thank you to my helpers, even if not needed in the end, the effort and stress for them is very big.

I saw Steve out on the course and he looked to be flying along nicely. I hope you had a good ride and didn't suffer in the heat as you looked fit as a butcher's dog before at HQ :) .

No I won't Snoop, it was a one off at a decent run. Even if I did another 12 I can't see me doing it there in a hurry while they're still using the A11, even being on it at 6am there was plenty of big traffic as the lorries are on it at all times and they quite rightly aren't going to keep moving out to pass cyclists as it would create a danger if they did. I just felt very exposed on it with so much big stuff so close and so fast which I think was probably a reason for missing the turn, I was concentrating so hard on all the various cut ins and overtaking vehicles, that said every turn off was being searched for an arrow as I wanted to get off it asap.

I've struggled with the long TTs as I don't feel I can "race" 100 miles upwards with the food/drink intake and pace metering. I'll stick to a few 10s and plenty of 25s and 50s which I like a lot and feel I can race well, just do the SCCU 100 to support the district.

Hard lines Andrew. Its a shame when something like that happens, its a bitter pill to swallow. The A11 sounds like a real nightmare

Very tough luck, which sounds like you didn`t deserve.

BTW did you win the club BAR even with a dnf. I reckon you deserve it.

Bad luck Andrew, you did sound a bit pi**ed off when we spoke yesterday.

I've ridden those roads several times, and if I remember correctly at both the A11 / A14 junctions you just stay in the lefthand lane and that takes you the correct way. That's probably why they didn't have a left turn arrow, as you're not actually turning off. But I agree, it would be better to have an arrow to cater for those who don't know the course. Someone made the same mistake in one of the fifties I rode this year, so it's not unheard of.

Need to reach the finishing circuit to be given a distance. No BAR with a DNF, that's why I thought about continuing for a little bit but I couldn't face another 9 hours in the mood I was in.

Maybe it was a blessing in disguise as reading reports the wind picked up and was strong and the temperature was 29. I'd have suffered in that heat towards the end, curse of being a ginger. The winner did 268 miles which is well down on last years and other riders from last year commented on how hard it became and their distances were approx 15miles down from last year.

I hope Steve didn't suffer in the heat and wind too much.

Very sorry to hear about your misfortune Andrew - Sue and I wondered what happened to you. Funnilly enough I almost went off course early on doing something similar but even more stupid. Instead of staying left to go over the Four Went Ways RAB for the first time I moved out to stay on the A11 but spotted the turn left sign just in time to get back on course. After that I had no trouble staying on course - Jon's right, it's essentially just keep left.

Well, what about the ride? I really only had one aim - to beat 240 miles (my best is an irritating 239.3) - so it was a bit of an all or nothing ride. Unlike Andrew I found the A11/A14 section ok though a bit busy on the second lap - I guess I'm just more used to bashing up and down these sort of roads. Anyway the first section out to the Red Lodge turn was pretty fast with a helpful wind and it wasn't too bad coming back into it the first time. I kept trying to keep my speed under control with a high cadence and a gear or two down on short distance racing, and kept drinking, so that I didn't suffer too much later on. I had several riders pass me in the first 50 but I still did it in 2:16 by my watch (roughly 22mph average speed) which was really a bit too fast. With the wind rising the second time out to Red Lodge was even quicker but this time the return leg was more of grind into the wind with my average speed falling steadily, but this was to be expected.

Things started to go wrong after around for hours riding when I started to struggle even with the wind behind me. I was hoping for some relief once I left the A11 to join the second circuit on relatively minor single carriageway (which turned out to be fairly hilly). I stopped a couple of times on the circuit to rest, eat, drink etc. but had slowed dramatically to pass the 100 mile point in around 4:48 (2:32 for the second 50!) when I was looking for something around 4:40. At this point the 240 was begining to look out of reach but I decided to try and ride through my bad patch (with tremendous support from Sue). Unfortunately the bad patch lasted for another 3 hours before I decided finally to give up after struggling with the heat (around 28C as Andrew said) and ever rising wind, and my legs felt worse than they did at any time in my LEJOG ride (and I was even developing a sore left big toe).

All in all it ended up being a very disappointing (and expensive) day out. I'm not sure whether I'll try another 12 - like Andrew I still tend to struggle with the eating and drinking. On reflection I think the real problem was dehydration and despite drinking regularly I just wasn't able to drink enough in the conditions (I had to abandon a Championship 12 in very similar conditions many years ago - on that occasion half the field were DNF!). In any case it was nowhere near as much fun as the LEJOG ride!

Really bad luck Steve, you looked to be going so well early on but 12s just go on for so long. The weather (heat and the wind) does sound as though is was a killer for many, such a shame for you as you must have been perfectly prepared after LEJOG if it had been a little kinder.

Definitely a year to forget for Addiscombe for the 12 hour :( .

I rode a lovely little sportive in the new forest rattler instead, it was a lovely morning, I was wondering how you guys were getting on at the time. Then me and the misses relaxed on the beach at Highcliffe in the afternoon.
I was gutted at first I didn't feel strong enough to ride the 12 hour, but the conditions were possibly the worst case scenario for a 12 with wind and heat
I wouldn't have been able to get a club record on that day.
Well done on trying guys and Andrew what were you doing riding in the middle lane of a dual carrigeway
