Brighton Ride

I appreciate that I am probably being a div but I can't find the post which includes Monty's low-down on the Brighton ride 5th Sept. I was reading it the other night and now can't find it Could someone help out? I thought perhaps it would be worthy of a post of its own as is a great ride and day out. I went both times last year and used to be a regular on the club run but haven't been in a while cause I think it would be good to branch out and do some different routes! I'll be there and bringing a mate along although he has yet to be convinced to do both ways...I'm sure someone will coax him into it.

Thanks yeah that's how I remember it and have been searching the forum using 'time trial', 'open 10', 'sept 5th' and various permutations. No luck so far. Just a crazy suggestion but someone could start an official post with the details

On Sept 5th the whole CR is off to Brighton, aiming to arrive directly at the Regency Restaurant (see above), which is opposite the burnt out pier, between 12-12.30pm to start carbo loading ASAP

To leave promptly at these suggested start times you are best arriving 5-10 mins earlier at CSS

8.00 off road grp

8.20 15 mph grp

8.40 16 mph grp

9.00 17 mph grp

9.20 18 mph grp

9.40 19 mph grp

10.00 TG

Suggested route is via the BHF London–Brighton charity ride route including Ditchling Beacon & back via Devils Dyke & reverse of clubrun, however there are numerous options available if you want to be a bit more adventurous

Some riders may want to turn back at Turners Hill, which is the same distance as the Charlwood cafe/regular CR. Others may want to only ride to Brighton & get a train or car back to Croydon. For the full return ride the estimated time back at CSS is c5pm

Please bring appropriate clothes, tubes, food, tools, drink, camera, cash & moby

If the weather is bad we will default to the regular CR

Of course, the most important thing about Brighton next Saturday is not the getting there, it's not the getting back, it's not the Beacon and the Dyke (and Box Hill just for fun), it's not the fabulous fish at the Regency - but it's coming to support Wycombe Wanderers in their bottom of the table clash against B&HA. 3pm at the Withdean.

Mark, If you have a chest infection, and certainly if you're still producing phlegm, then you shouldn't do something like a Brighton ride, even at a slower pace. Better to rest and recover properly or you'll risk doing more harm than good and prolonging the illness.

Seeing as I must have been the first one home from the Brighton ride, perhaps I should be the first to write a review.
Set off with the 16 group, nice easy pace with the sun starting to warm things up, looking forward to the legendary fish and chips at the Regency.

Unfortunately, I only got as far as Merstham! We were just about to pass through one of those width restriction things, when a car approached from the opposite direction. I think both us and the driver were unsure of who had priority, so the whole group slowed down to avoid a head on crash. As we slowed down, one of our group touched my back wheel and must have started to go down, their bike (handlebars I think) then got entangled in my back wheel.

Neither of us seemed to be injured (hope you are OK by the way), but my bike did not look very well at all. Several spokes were missing from the back wheel, and to my horror, my right seatstay was snapped in half!

Thanks to all those who helped patch up the bike, but it was beyond help. I eventually trudged back to Merstham station and got the train home.

The bike was only 3 weeks old and right now I just can't say how gutted I am about it, the frame at least is a write off.

This now leaves me with the wonderful task of trying to claim on my insurance for the damage. I have had a look at the claim form and it looks like it would greatly assist things if I had a few witnesses, so if you saw the incident and you don't mind me giving your details to my insurance company, then please PM me or grab me at the next club run. Also, if you were the young lady (Virginia perhaps??) who 'made contact' with the back of my bike, please could you get in touch with me (or if anyone else knows how to contact her) as I will need to put your details on my claim form.

Anyway, I now want to see lots of positive write ups of the ride. Who was the first over Ditchling? Did anyone set the speed trap camera off on the run down the other side? Was the fish and chips as good as ever?

Enjoyed the ride - thanks. Arrived 10 minutes later than my group so went with 19s including Sylv, Jonathan, Nick, Andrew and others. J knew the way and I just hung on to the group which went quite quickly with Sylv flying up the hills.

It was great that it all came together at DB and I tried to jump away from the group through the village but they soon caught me and Sylv slipped through 3 groups of cyclists to hit the top first. The rest of the ride into Brighton was fine as was lunch.

Decided to return with a more moderate group including 2 x Nicks, Dombo and some others. We went fairly well but slowed a bit mid ride. We lost one member to the temptations of Horsham rail but arrived back in good shape. I had about 98 Miles, mostly sunny riding. legs tired today so resting big time.
