I love cats (not attention seekrs like dogs, and independent, which I like), but we haven't got one as they are not good for other wildlife in gardens. Christmas 2 years ago we got two rabbits, brother male argente brun rabbits from a recue home in South London (Mitcham way I think). As they were identical we named them tom and jerry. Sadly 2 weeks ago both escaped from our garden and only one returned 2 days later. The other one is 'missing'. The remaining brother is a bit depressed so we need to get another rabbit.

I like both cats and dogs. Ride through Nonsuch Park and you have to stop and say hello to all the mutts. I grew up with dogs - one we had for 18 years after he was found outside the neighbouring butchers :D As he could have been as old as five at the time we found him he was a very lucky, long lived dog.

As for cats, they're companions but traditionally their main job was pest control which is why many of the ferals are rehomed at places like stables.

I too grew up with and love both cats and dogs. Dogs offer loyalty and have that infectious, bounding lust for life but are quite high maintenance, while cats can be aloof and selfish, but also very affectionate (when it suits them) and can be downright hilarious to watch. We only have a cat at the moment, a tortoiseshell we got from Battersea Dog's Home and she, like all cats, is a real character.

Kieran's got a point about cats not being great for garden wildlife - I've read that domestic cats have decimated urban bird populations - but my cat is just too lazy (and a little bit overweight!) to bother the neighbourhood bird life, for which I'm relieved.

I believe that pets help make a house a home and that they enrich your life. Let one of these furry dudes into your house and your heart and you won't regret it.

[quote="Amy"]I'm sickened by the fact that some of these animals were just abandoned because their owners needed to cut back on something in the recession

Me too. In this overbearing world of PCness we seem to be prevented from asking the great british unwashed questions to judge their suitability or otherwise as pet owners, before the transaction takes place. Just sell em the damn dog/cat then move on to the next one. Pets, you take it or leave it. Since my goldfish died in 1970 something I've gotten over it and now, I just don't see the point. Cats kill hundreds of thousands of garden birds each and every year. Wouldn't mind so much if they ate 'em after. And dogs, well they're just dogs ain't they. Mind you, if I had a dog, maybe I could set it on the many irresponsible dog owners wot give their pets a bad name....

Still hungry

But we could now open an even bigger box, whilst on the subject of irresponsible dog owners which i agree there are some, how about the irresponsible parents who let under 16 year olds rome the streets after 10pm drinking doing drugs etc, under age sex which produces 15 year old mothers pushing prams and lose their education etc, Oooooo could go on for ages :D

Amy,

I agree that cats are limited in their job suitability whereas dogs have an abundance of roles...however not sure about this hound dog being too keen to fulflil his role.... (I wouldn't blame him either) :) - great expression

Sorry to hear that Kieran. It is however a good illustration of why you should not name your pets - whatever flavour - after famous duos. One goes missing, you find a replacement and, before you know it, you're saddled with Starsky and Morecombe.

A mate of mine who owned a pub in Woolwich had a dog called Deefa, when asked why the unsual name he replied it was called Deefa as in D for dog (true story) :D

I'll let Graham explain about his two cats and their names.

I would be a whole lot more depressed if it wasn't for the fact that I come home to a furry friend who's happy to see me (even if it's only cupboard love) and I agree with Wal - animals make a home and teach children about a lot things like responsibility and consequences - as in 'pull that cat's/dog's tail and you'll end up with claws/teeth somewhere' - well maybe not quite the teeth but at least a snap.

Jon, I can see why you're like you are, having lost custody of the cat...

Oh, I dunno....one of our guinea pigs was looking a little peaky....so we renamed them Randall and Hopkirk
