5k Running times

I know all this training business makes us sound a bit serious but, well, some people really are into this bike lark so feel free to talk about all training & self improvement related topics in here

how exciting I'll soon be able to post a 5km running time too, as I have just entered our daughter's primary school "Fairlawn Fun Run" to be held in dulwich park on 18th Oct. Now to find my running legs, last seen about 12 years ago somewhere in Lancaster.

Enjoyed that - still can't believe it's all free! And I liked the little hill, the only way I was able to shake off Paul and Ben

photo by Declan Flynn - Paul, me and Ben down the hill

End of first lap on big downhill into a tight corner we were still together and Ben came hurtling past like a steaming train - I swear I've never seen him go into a corner on a bike that fast

Did the clubrun after, slightly tight thighs for a few miles but ok afterwards, Marek (despite being even faster than usual down the hills thanks to his mega-rucksack loaded with gear) and Ben fell back after a while so I was left to battle with Paul and Matt on their TT bike - there was more wind that I was expecting so it wasn't easy as their were going mega-strong (and check out Matt's run PB). I bonked with a mile to go and got duly dropped! My legs just fell off and didn't come back on for the return run despite the peanut butter toasts and coke, I was just hiding in the bunch. Got back in time to watch the women's race which was totally ace (who was it at the café who said they wouldn' t bother watching "the women's race"?). Oh and i just saw the result of the U23 men's race :D

I found that really tough this week, lack of run training and a few too many cheeky beers throughout the week meant I could no way compete with Paul, Sylv and Ben. They disappeared up the track after about a 1km and I was trying to keep them in sight but was really struggling.

Felt ok on the bike, but when Ben dropped off and we saw the 17s group it was just a much better place to be than to carry on killing myself trying to keep up with Paul, Matt and Sylv who had obviously had some breakfast. Something else that I unfortunately missed out on as my youngest woke up too early and drank the last of the milk. Grrrr.

Enjoyed it, but am stiff as a board today.

Cheers

Marek....

No it's all hardpack, with a few roots and rocks to avoid. I found it quite fast as there's a bit more downs than ups (you don't finish where you start) but it's certainly not flat. Paul reckons your 5km pace here = your 10km pace on a fast tarmac course. It was a PB for me but I have only done a handul of 5km and none since June.

Went to see the Switchback today - saw Ben 10 min before the start, then rode the course in reverse up to the climb at the observatory point in Shirley Hills. Waited for the frontrunners to come through halfway through their race, Ben just under 1min down, then as i was about to ride back to the finish I saw the two leaders go past on their return leg, with a clear gap on anyone else, so i followed them on the bike for 10 min to the finish, they were flying, it was great! One guy sat behind the whole way and moved up with just 2 min to go and was able to retain a few meters lead. Looked like a great event for me with lots of ups and downs.

Is Ben dropping behind because your running round a bend...we all know he's hopless at going round corners on a bike but didn't think it would be the same with his running :D

I wondered what happened to you yesterday Sylv on the return leg from the cafe, kept expecting you to come past me.

Saturday was good fun, especially on the bike afterwards. I enjoyed sitting in behind Marek, while it lasted, as that rucksack, was creating a huge hole. Several times I thought about climbing into it, as the guys in front, were flying along.

Legs went pop and lucky enough; there was an addiscombe group and then Keith, who was out for a spin, to tow me to the café.

As for the photo, unfortunately I’m dropping back because their going too quick. They soon disappeared when we went up the small hill round the corner.

Thanks for the support Sylv at the Lloyd’s Park switchback run yesterday. It was good motivation, to put in, a bit more effort at the end.

Plan to do the 5k again next Saturday.

So maybe we can expect you to be on the start line next week with us then Ant? I think you might be surprised at how fast a runner Ben is (I was). And he raced another 8km the following morning, my legs were shot and I was glad I wasn't. Don't worry if you can't make it, it's on every Saturday. Ah, I can hear the knee excuse already!

Sylv, how shot were your legs because mine are still feeling the pain 2 days later, not sure whether bad nutrition or just lack of recent run training, but my legs are killing me and have been since Saturday afternoon. Maybe a bit more of a warm up and some stretching afterwards would have helped rather than the 4 cans of Carlsberg I had in the evening after the run.

Oh I know Bens a good runner, I've noticed some of his times and they're pretty impressive. We've laughed about it at the cafe with him, if he could ride and swim as fast as he runs he'd be unstoppable. :D

You won't catch me running, I hate it, all that effort to cover such a small distance, must be mad. I was the fastest sprinter at school and not to shabby at the middle distances, not really run since then though I did run non stop from the top of Snowdon to the bottom about 10 years ago, couldn't walk for a week after that stunt.

Besides my knee's sore

Legs are fine Marek, went for a fast-ish (<40min) run at lunch today and had no pain at all. It's probably a lack of training, it was the same for me before I started running at least twice a week. You know the score do you - protein drink-cold shower-massage-compression tights-legs up. Matt said he had lots of beers BEFORE his run - didn't seem to slow him down ..

Damn, I was on for a fast one yesterday (stopped after 13mins). Bloody lower back pain is back! Now I know why I stopped running years ago :(
