I've done the club run several times now on my mountain bike but want to get a road bike as soon as possible.
I'm 5 foot 11 so if anyone has anything suitable I would be grateful if you let me know.

Road bike is definitely the way to go.... the difference in speed is noticeable. You'll never want to go back to MTBing on road.

The cheapest sold at GBcycles in Croydon is about £500.... tho I did get mine from there for £444 in a Christmas sale.

Its also worth looking in De Ver cycles (near Streatham Common), they flog the usual suspects..Giants, Treks and Specialized's (and colnago's)but might be able to offer you a good deal.

I'm selling my brother's Dawes 400 Giro if you want an entry level bike. It's about 5 yrs old but only had 18 months light use. He's about 6'1 -2 but I think it was a bit small for him so might suit 5'11. I'll measure it up and post more details if you're interested. £150 ono.

If you have the patience to build a bike up yourself, you can get...

Ambrosio Solaro frame £55 from fatbirds.co.uk shop on eBay
ITM Millennium carbon forks £65 as above
I also got a carbon setapost and ITM bars new for £28 on eBay
Wheels and groupset from Ribble (Campag Veloce 9spd for about £250) and spread the payments with chequespread.
I'm doing this for my training bike and it's much more cost effective than an off-the-peg bike.

What about Cables, Saddle, Headset, Stem, bar tape, bottle cages, bottom bracket, matching clothes for colour of frame etc etc. I think it all adds up when you build you own and before you know it you will have spent a grand. I would see if you can find a cheap built up bike on Ebay as there should be loads in the 58cm region which sounds like the sort of size you need.

If you have not built a bike before as Phil S says you need to be patient as getting the parts and finding that things don't fit etc is quite common, well it was for me.

Not sure if this is cheeky as not yet an ACC member...

I have a 55/56cm (?) training bike that I'll sell at a snip. £50. I'm 5'11 " too and it's bang on for me. I have a 32" inside leg, if that helps.
It's 12 years old but haven't ridden it for 10 due to injury. I've looked after it in meantime.
As you're looking to start now it's perfect as a 'get me started' road bike that you can muddy up over the winter and it'll take it.
Then when Spring comes you'd have saved up for your sparkling Colnago C50 with Record Carbon (umm??!)...

Apart from the saddle and handlebar tape it's in good nick. I'd be happy to replace them for a wee bit extra, or easy enough to do yourself.

Spec:
Basic, reliable steel road frame with mudguard eyelets, silver with blue flashes. Steel/chromed forks.
Mavic Open 4 CD rims, 36 spoke, Chorus 7 speed hubs. Hutchinson punture-proof training tyres.
Non indexed Chorus gears, shifters on down-tube.
Shimano Exage brakes and chainet.
Regal saddle (comfy but a bit knackered)
Look entry-level clipless pedals.

Altogether a basic, solid package that'd get you started and on the road to bigger things.
