How? We're grown ups and should be responsible for ourselves, not need to be shepherded around set routes. One of the greatest joys of cycling is the freedom it gives you and discovering new routes, whether that is by yourself or through remembering routes, or sections of, that you have covered with others. It is also very satisfying being thanked by others you have taken on a ride, or shown a new route, once you have discovered one.

Totally agree with Andrew on this. Even when I'm visiting the outlaws in Cardiff and ride with local clubs Jif or Ajax I don't expect to be nannied about or waited for if dropped. A few "Alright, mate, woss occuring?"'s at the start, tell 'em my blood group in case anyone needs to ask and we're off. If I lose them, head downhill til I hit the M4 or the sea, and figure it out from there :D .

Personally I would say that the Saturday CR is the place if you want the control, Sunday you learn to fend for yourself, either take a map with you or follow signposts if you get lost/dropped. Hey presto you may even find a new bit that you can show people and extend both parties knowledge.

What a complete Meanie. Please ignore Andrew, he's turning into his Avatar persona   Of course there should be a Sunday Club Run. If clubs half the size of ours can manage 2/3 runs a week why can't we. :D

At least Andrew is doing something towards the club ..

I think there are 2 elements to this discussion, unless I am missing the point here. The string started off with a suggestion of getting an ACC Sunday CR with different routes. As an idea this is great as it gives folks the flexibility on the weekends. However there are a number of members who arrange alternative runs on Sundays and even on Saturdays, which of course is great, but as I understand it are not official CR's. I say this because the normal CR rules don’t seem to apply on some of these rides with regard to staying in a group, looking after riders if dropped etc. Please do not see this at a criticism to those who take the time out to arrange these rides, as they are normally well described before hand and at the end of the day you as an individual can choose whether or not the ride is for you!!

All I am saying is that if we choose to have a official CR then its going to attract all abilities and therefore it needs the etiquette of the Saturday CR where we look after riders if they get dropped or lost as we wouldn’t want to frighten riders off by loosing them in deep dark Surrey/Kent etc.

Holy moly....well said Rob....putting some well needed clarity into the thread, before it as usual disappears into Monty Pythonesque quips, contradiction, point scoring etc etc.

Simple innit (or am I just being too simplistic)?:

1. Propose Sunday CRs to AGM - I'm presuming it has to go to committe & I guess we send it to Paul Tunnell a la Snoops email?
2. Get commitment from C & VCs to it?
3. Start......

Everyone can still go off and ride diff routes/days etc (relatively free country after all innit?). I'm out Tue & Thu this week as an example!

The problems normally come from the regular and solid commitment that would be needed to have x number of VCs/group leaders (existing or newly nominated to Monty) every week for a prolonged period, regardless of weather, and push other commitments aside while this was got off the ground.

Not trying to put a dampner on it and full of admiration for people that want to do it, just saying it takes a big commitment from a number of people. This would include perhaps forfeiting your own ride on the CR to a degree to ride down a group or two to lead a slower group. Otherwise there would be the danger of it backfiring with people not knowing if they should turn up, would there be enough VCs/group leaders, what speed groups would be going etc.

My two penneth....(yawn)

There's some great feedback and input here. I wonder if we try to start this small and reasonably informal. Maybe monthly or fortnightly to start. It can still get PR from the club without being a full blown supervised a la Saturday version. That needs to be made clear, which is easy enough.

At least until and if it grows, then things can be looked at again. I think if this is too formal from the off it may just struggle to get off the ground. I would certainly be happy to put my meagre efforts behind helping establish a Sunday....something. I like the idea of steady, and varied routes. I bet we know some corkers among us

Let's ave it!!!!

You could probably start off with two groups only anyhow....commonly known as 'fast' and 'slow' (or if you're a 'half full' kinda person..call it 'not so fast' or if your 'half empty' then it's probably a hangover).

That way minimum committment from VCs required....urm ....urm..2....

...unless.....

....you increase the number of VCs (if this is a requirement to run the Sunday CR as 'official' ACC business?)....surely out of all the membership there's bound to be others prepared to VC it?

From my POV (and from what I hear) many can often make it either Sat or Sun and this can vary week by week, so if we're looking to max participation in the club and 'ride' the swell of cycling's current popularity now's the time to get Sunday on the go again....

Could we not survey the membership on the demand for Sunday CRs - use email, forum net form (Marco - is this poss?)?

two groups'' fast'' and ''slow'' is a good idea IMO...Elmers End would be a good start as Marco said.

Agree with Snoop here. Keep it informal to start eg 0900 pitch up at GBs then whoever's there after 15 mins or so go on a ride.

I know I bang on about my occasional rides with Cardiff Jif but they seem to work fine - meet at bike shop on Saturday morning then head off; Sundays meet at Maindy Stadium and, er, head off.

All we need is a regular time and place and GBs is our local road bike shop so seems a natural place to start. If nobody else turns up, then ride by yourself or go home. We're all grownups, and total newbies would come to CSS on Saturday anyway.
At the end of the day it's just a bunch of people going for a bike ride, not the Normandy landings.

As a new member of ACC and a new convert to the sport i think that if you want it to grow to become a well attended
club activity it needs to be open to as many members as possible. I think to have a fast and a slower ride is the way forward, not as regimented as saturday but this enables people like myself who is a newbie but cant make saturdays as much as i liked to ride. The keen people such as andrew etc who organized last sundays ride are much too fit and experianced for me to keep up with.while Im not frightened of being dropped and finding my way home alone i cycle on my own in the week and i quite like the socialbiltyof a group ride.

Not necessarily. We were dropping like flies. You'd have had ample opportunities to bale out, and with company too :D

A ride, yes, but not really a Club Run ... http://www.addiscombe.org/members/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=10293
