Anyone got or can recommend the Garmin products? My Shimano flightdeck is a complete pos - keeps cutting out randomly, gear indicator doesn't work properly, total pants. Any other recommendations welcome. Cadence is nice but I don't desperately need it. I don't need a power wattage counter thingy either or HR counter ( I only look at my HR out of curiosity).

EDGE 305 - the cheaper older version of the 705??

This does all the things you listed above. Ive had mine about 2 years and is only just starting to play up a bit

Obviously if you want to download routes and the like then these won't be any good, but...

I like wired computers as I find the wireless ones always have mad moments and drop out from time to time.
Cateye Strada - excellent little computer. great operation and fitment to stem/bars. I have the normal wire version on a couple of bikes and the wireless on my TT bike as it's easier due to the bike have internal cabling for the tribars.
Cateye Enduro - a more old skool style of cateye but works well and has a chunky cable that will stand up to a bit of abuse and grotty conditions. Got one of these on my Commuting/winter geared bike.
Even more old skool - a proper analogue watch for timing, and OS map and a bit of string for distance measuring.

Cheers for that. Funnily enough the most reliable one I have is a wired Digi-x jobby I got for a fiver in GBs sale that's on my station bike

I can recommend the Cateye strada too. It's got all the basic functions that you need and they also do a cadence one now too. Neat little unit.

I've also got the garmin edge 305. Got good features although the gps routing side isn't ideal but it is good to upload where you've been after a ride.

garmin forerunner 50, a watch that is not too thick to wear at work/every day. Stop watch, dual time zone. Can measure heart rate, speed, cadence, also if you are into running it can linked to their foot pod.

A fine piece of kit, I remember sitting there rotating the wheel to get it to nudge over to another 0 at the end before going out with mates. Only if it was on a 9 not spinning a wheel for 8 or 9 miles worth. Can't think why now as we were only bombing around the local streets not setting out for a proper ride but for some reason it made sense at the time.

I like the little leather strap for keeping the hub shiny. If you pan up the fork can we expext to see a cigarette card held in place with a clothes peg?
