New chain slips - why?

Postby Jon C C on a Bianchi » Thu Oct 29, 2009 12:51 pm

Hi All - some help please

Just replaced my chain - old one worn to 0.75 - and it slips!!! :(

Now I change my chains regularly as soon as they reach 0.75 wear and never let them go to 1.0. I've never had slipping problems since I adopted this regime and I must have replaced the chain four or five times in the last couple of years.

The only thing that's different this time is the make of chain. I have always used KMC chains but this time I used a Shimano (the only one they had in the shop). Could that explain the problem? Should I keep to KMC? or shouldn't it matter?

or regardless of how careful you are does it mean that the cassette will wear eventually and it's simply just come to the end of it's life? The cassette is a shimano ultra about two years old and I probably ride 2,500 miles a year.

any ideas gratefully received.

thanks

Jon

where's it slipping? could be chainrings or cassette? Eventually they wear down, especially modern 9/10 speed ones with teeth shaped to aid shifting.

Most likely the cassette, some chains have less tolerance than others to worn cassettes.

For example, the new Dura Ace chain will not run properly on anything less than a perfect cassette. Where as the old Dura Ace chain seemed to be more accmodating...

in the old days all you had to do was reverse the rings when shark fin shaped and you had another while.

It will also only run in one direction, well its designed that way anyway.

i.e. another way to con you out of money by keep splashing out in cassettes. That or typical manufacturers marketing ball-hooks.

Judging by the things like this from Shimano, and I think the Di2 stuff is a ridiculous idea too - dread to think how much money's been spent on it and how long have they been trying to get it to work? - and the unnecessary 11 speed coupled with the wild design switch (to something ugly) from Campag they've lost their marbles. They must both have been so unprepared for SRAM's move in to the market, despite being well known, and have no idea what to do. Before people were in one camp or the other so they tended to have captive markets.

To answer your question it sounds like you used your old chain for too long. This would have stretched and worn down your cassette, so you probably need a new cassette. Morale of the story is check your chain with a chainwear indicator every couple of weeks. When it is worn replace the chain and you won't have to replace the cassette as well.

Cheers

Hi Marek

I check the chain every couple of weeks or so. as i said i change the chain when it gets to 0.75 every time. never let it get to 1.0.

I've bought a KMC chain today and going to try that. otherwise another new cassette. bum.

Sorry mate, I didn't actually read your post, just read some responses and the title.

Sounds like KMC is the answer.

Cheers

Replaced the Shimano chain with a KMC chain and guess what? It works fine - no slip. :D :D :D

so the make of chain does matter. you live and you learn.
