Tyre pressures

Over the past two weeks I have had 7 punctures. I usually run 110-120 psi front and back. I put new Continental Ultra on last week and have suffered 3 since, two of these have been pinch puntures, I think. I have pumped up to 100 ad 110 psi with the new tyres but still got flats.

I have a decent track pump (paid £40) so I'd like to think the gauge is accurate. I weigh 90kg.

What can I do to reduce this number?

could just be bad luck. we've all had a week of constant punctures.... and I haven't had one for ages - months.
pressure sounds fine, wouldn't hurt to check with a pressure gauge that the pumps doing its stuff although it's pretty easy to feel whether a tyres up to 100.

another option, try out a different brand of tyre.

Maybe pump them a bit higher. I'm 65kg and run the same pressure as you, and I don't get pinch punctures. That's with Conti 4000S tyres, which have a recommended max of 120psi. Vredestein Fortezza Tricomps are maxed at 175psi. Both probably have a margin of safety a few psi over.

No don't go too high. 100psi to 120psi is good for just about everyone, if you go too high they the ride quality will be terrible as they'll bounce off every piece of grit and you'll lower the contact patch and reduce grip. don't pay too much attention to what the tyre says as they give a maximum rating, my TT tubs have a max of 220psi but you wouldn't want to ride the things like that.

I vary between 10.5 to 11 stone and tend to use 100psi front and 110psi rear, slightly lower in bad conditions - i.e. very wet or potentially icy to give a slightly bigger contact patch but only 5-10psi lower. Sounds like you're at about the right psi for your size.

The most important thing to help avoid punctures is to de-flint your tyres regularly. Depending on how much you use the bike and the conditions then either once a week, or fortnight, go round both tyres and remove all the little bits of grit and glass that are embedded in the tyres. Some are worse that others for it, but just flick them out with the end of a pointed knife.

I ride approx. 3-5 times / week. I already check for flints and Use Andrew G's tip of filling in holes and cuts with Super glue, which works a treet.

The roads I ride are probably the cause, many seem to have gravel and flints and poorly kept, I have also had two cuts in the tyre sidewalls recently :(

Advice to self - don't ride down roads covered in flints orgravel.

I thought I read on a tyre thread on YACF many moons ago that Continentals are particularly prone to flint induced punctures. My only experience with Conti HPs was Gatorskins and I had 4 punctures in one 200k ride when they were brand new :roll:

This could possible be true if my limited experience of them is anything to go by.

Being my 1st winter of road riding and therefore zero experience of winter tyres, what would be a good punture resistant winter tyre to use and should I fit 25s instead of the 23s I run at other times, would this make a difference?

I always tend to run Contis and don't have any problems. Some cut a bit more than others - 3000s cut quite a bit and 4Seasons which are pretty much the same but with an added puncture protection belt, 4000s hardly seem to cut at all despite being a soft compound race tyre.

I run 4000s on my good bike and 4 Seasons on my winter/commuter, think it's a mix depending on what I had on fixie etc.

I don't think 25s will make any difference to cuts, they will give a bigger contact patch and be a bit more comfy. I've run some in the past (Panaracer Extreme Duro) which are very good, still got a spare pair to go on at some point.

Mark go for continental 4 seasons for best puncture resistance commuting or clubrun

go for gatorskins if you want some grief with punctures

avoid conti 4000 at all costs

but conti 4000(S) is the best winter training/racing tyre

Thanks guys, I have been considering the 4 seasons and will definately get some now. Will stick with 23s.

Hopefully my quota of punctures are now over, as I had another 2 yesterday. I may have to go back to mountain biking for the winter.

That is a lot of punctures. Are the rims okay? You haven't got a chip or anything that might be cutting in have you? Maybe just a faulty batch of tyres, the amount that are made there's bound to be a few iffy ones get made.

I have checked the rims, realigned the rim tapes and will be replacing these.

I believe it is just bad luck. The last two flats were caused by a thorn and the other a pinch flat whilst going down White Hill in Chaldon at near 30+ and hitting a bump whilst trying to avoid a car coming up the hill. Hopefully that is it for the winter.

i have been using Vittoria With the green strips for training and the blue strips for my good bike and racing and touch wood had very little trouble.Although by joining in this post i have probably doomed myself to many punctures now.
