Headset Removal

Postby Keith » Sun Nov 01, 2009 2:40 pm

The headset on my race bike is shot. (I've been stripping down the bike to check things out following yesterday's crash.)

The old bearing are going to take some persuading to get out. Has anyone got a 1-1/8" extractor? Something like a Park Tool RT-1.

First off, glad you're ok. Not wanting to teach you to suck eggs, but it might be worth having a shop give it the once over. If you have to make a claim against his insurers I'm guessing you'll need something more official eg a damage report from a bike shop.

I don't think that I can claim 2 years worth of water ingress was his fault. I found the problem whilst stripping down the bike.

Me too. Suprising how resiliant the body can be sometimes. Going to be taking it easy for a while though. I've developed a bit of whiplash and my left butt cheek and shoulder are sore from the landing.

must admit I took my old headset out just tapping it out with some pipe and a mallet.

I do have one of those - you could collect it from me from work if you're doing the club run this Sat (you'll be passing very near where I will be), or alternatively pop in during the day Thursday onwards. I also have a headset press for fitting a new headset if needed.

PM me if you need them still.

Thanks for the offer Spike, but....

I took the frame to a shop. They couldn't persuade the bearings to come out either.

It's now on it's way back to Specialized.
