Lemond is a tit.
Armstrong makes Trek the company it is.
The bigger, stronger, richer Trek goes into partenrship with Lemond.
Lemond presses his self-destruct button by slagging LA every opportunity he gets.
And he wonders why Trek dumped him.
What a tit.

You could argue that Trek back in 1994/1995 weren't big and strong. Hence why they agreed to distribute a product under the Lemond brand.

Nah. Trek'll settle. They'll work out how much Lemond could have earned if they'd sold more of his bikes, knock off a smidge for their counterclaim, add a bit for non-disclosure of terms, another bit for never mentioning LA again, and a clawback clause if he breaks those terms.

I bet you a cup of tea and a slice of your favourite cake/bacon sarny on the next CR after the above settlement is announced :)

Reading that book extract brought back memories of Lance's first win that he rarely brings up in public. He opened up something like a 3-4 min gap on Zulle in the first week when he attacked after a crash in the peloton (passage du Gois if I remember correctly). Zulle matched Lance for the next 2 weeks in the mountains and gave up near the end when he realised the gap was too big.

If Lance had adhered to the peloton etiquette / done the honorable thing and not taken advantage of the crash then who knows. He might have finished third, lost some of his sponsorship and not been able to buy out all the best tour riders over the next five years. Oh I dream. Now if only Ullrich stayed away from those cakes ..............

Now, I am not a Lance fan by any stretch of the imagination, however...

I believe the crash on the first stage in '99 happened as a result of Postal driving it at the front, in the knowledge a crash was likely. Anyone caught out that day deserved it, they obviously hadn't done their homework. Had they done so, they wouldn't have been sitting so far down the bunch heading into a narrow cross wind section covered in sea weed, would they? This is not going against etiquette, this was just one of Johan Bruyneels many master strokes. Just like in 2004, he didn't attack Mayo after he crashed, he was already riding 2nd wheel, to Hincapie, nailing it over the pavé. Ullrich and others were right up there, it was Mayo's fault for not being in the right place at the right time. Remember Lance did wait for Ullrich after a terrible crash in the Pyrenees one year, he knew the etiquette. Perhaps it's a Spanish thing? Good luck to Contador this coming Tour...

Grey area I'll admit, acceptable tactics on a one day classic but not seen so much on a three week tour, I just feel Zulle never really got any credit for his ride in that TdF.

The facts are hazy on these ones and bear in mind I am biased but .........

I can't really remember the Mayo incident but at the time wasn't Lance saying nice things about Mayo trying to entice him towards joining Postal. Anyway he also knew he had plenty time to out time trial Mayo later in the race. On the Ullrich incident, Armstrong was already ahead by a few minutes on GC and really just helped Ullrich consolidate his second place and him his first place. At the end of that stage both of them pulled out even more time on all their rivals. I'm only teasing now but funny how he didn't waste much time waiting for Beloki ?

Not sure Lemond will settle out of court as I suspect he wants his day in court so he can ask LA questions about drugs.

Lets focus on less honourable riders where there is far more evidence of drug taking e.g. Stephen Roche one of the first EPO dopers? Why doesnt he get the grief LA gets?

I deliberately didn't mention the D-word, my main point is there are many other questionable things about LA then just the D-issues.

The original insult may have been D-related but the court case is about whether Trek honoured their commitment to Lemond bikes or whether they were intimidated/threathened by Lance to ignore the brand.

Mr Roche is another story and he also has some questionable non-D related racing tactics in his closet. Let's just say if you were the team leader you wouldn't want him as your super-domestique.

As for why he doesn't get the same hassle on D-issues as Lance, probably because by the time the blood logs became public it was all a long time ago and nobody cared. He did get a reasonable amount of hassle though when Paul Kimmage first published his book (first edition contained a few flaky insinuations, current editions are slightly different) and at the time his behaviour was slightly Lance-like in terms of dis-crediting detractors. His attitude these days is much mellower though.

[quote="Alex P"]Dom,

Certainly do. Love it, great bike. Although Grahame suggested I park it among the Treks at the cafe rather than sully the Italian thoroughbreds everyone else rides.
My only regret is that I didn't buy another one from the US when they were being massively discounted after Trek dumped them.

I only offered the tea and a slice bet to Marco. I'm not running a book for the whole club :D

Wasn't me, guv. I like LeMond's bikes - even if they are "just" dressed up Treks  (remember, I guide mountainbike holidays on the offroad equivalent - a Gary Fisher full suss), and I was this <-> close to buying a LeMond Zurich when Sylv decided that his Sunn Team Ti was just too big for him, and thus just right for me, and sold it to me for a price we were both happy with.

Well that was a waste of mouse click. Not exactly Larry David, is he?

Reminds of those 80's "comedians" who wouldn't wash for a week, come up on stage and say "fockin Thatcher" and have the crusties in the student union falling about in helpless mirth.
