OK then Wal rides at the back with the 900 lumens and nobody else will need any lights.

I've experimented with using what I thought was a good commuter LED but it's suprising just how little you can make out. Maybe 3 or 4 bike lengths ahead and then nothing, so it's OK as long as your not going too quick. I then bought a proper light, (Exposure Race, 480 lumen, £150) and couldn't believe the difference, on full power it feels like a car headlight. Most of the time I just use it on half power which is plenty good enough. I justified the price by having a part off-road commute.

That said, if there's a group of 5 or 6 and everyone else has lights you wouldn't need long range lights could get away with following someone else's line.

I also heard Tesco do a good LED torch, pencil size. Stick it in a bit of old inner tube and cable tie it to your helmet. Head torch for about £10. In fact buy two and some rechargeable batteries. I've never seen this working but hear they're good enough, just a bit of a faff with the batteries. (Half the cost of expensive lights is usually the battery and charger)

Or buy an exposure Lights Joystick with Li-ion battery, 200 lumens for 3 hours about £150.

[quote]Watch out for Import duty.

Import duty doesn't apply - for goods imported via post it's customs duty and/or import VAT (OK, call me a pedant).

Customs duty applies only to goods worth over £120 so I'll only have to pay VAT and possibly a Royal Mail handling fee. Still a bargain.

I've had a number of lights from DealExtreme and they are excellent VFM, some of the light mounts on some of the lights can be a bit iffy but you can sort something out yourself easily enough. Their small 1 watt LED lights are quite good for commuting on lit roads (i.e. get you seen but not for you to see with) and only cost about USD 8-10 compared to the same thing by a "name" on wiggle for at least GBP 20-25.

Delivery didn't take that long, I think I've always had stuff within a week-10 days.

[quote="marco"]Shall we kick them off tomorrow and see how they work out?

7.15pm at EC BR? Out for an hour and a half

Pace will be slow. Very slow. You'll understand why when you realise you can't really see all that far in front of you in the woods at night.

This won't be training of any kind but it will be about getting back in touch with that feeling you used to get when you rode a bike as a kid and just went out to play on it.

You do not need suspension. You do not need super bright lights (just go slower if your lights are bad). You do need a helmet and ideally a spare inner tube.

Who's in?

I'm in. 7.15 it is then!
I take it we meet at the cab pull-in bit in the car park?

[quote="Wal"]Right, just ordered the 900 lumen Magicshine LED light from Dealextreme for £50 including delivery. Judging by the reviews I've seen this is an incredible light for the money, comparing favourably to others that are 4 times the price. Can't wait to try it out!

Thanks for the tip Wal just ordered a set myself. I was just about to purchase a twin set pf lights for 4 times as much as these after finding out my old set from last year no longer work.

So will ride with you all when they arrive.

Can't wait..

I'll try to make it but unlikely to be there before 7.30.

Don't wait, I will try to catch-up. Do you take the same route thro' Lloyd Park, Conduit Lane and Croham Hurst up to Selsdon ?

Aodan.

Really wanted to come to this but I fell over on Tuesday and sprained my ankle (grrr) so out of action for at least a few days. Hope to be better for Penshurst cx but it's touch and go at the moment :(

I've got one of the Deal Extreem 900-lumen torches on my bike.
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.12623
I think it's fair to say that the 900-lumen rating is a bit over-zealous
Compared to my Fenix 200 lumen torch, it brighter, sure, but not 4.5 times brighter.
I would take the 900 lumen claims with a pich of salt.
You're more likely looking at 600 lumens.
