Sealskinz socks

Postby Marcus » Mon Nov 23, 2009 2:18 pm

This is my second season with these socks and they have yet to convince me of the waterpoofing abilities.
Got completely soacked yesterday and will now put these in the bin as they are not even warm in the dry.

Would I wear agin: No
Would I buy again: No
Would I recommend: Yes if your objective is to have wet feet.

I've found the PRO "waterproof" overshoes pretty good. Waterproof is of course a bit of a lie as in order to clip in to your pedals there are of course holes in the bottom to go around the cleats, and provide handy gaps fpr the water to get in. They're pretty good to keep them reasonably dry, or drier for longer, and most importantly they keep your feet warm once wet.

For winter riding you can't beat winter boots. I use the Northwave Farenheit ones and they're maaaarvelous. As warm as any overshoe but without the extra bulkiness, waterproof for longer than any overshoe, generally lovely snug fellas for your tootsies. Can seem expensive at first but once you look at how often you'd wear them and the usage they'd get they don't work out expensive at all, particularly as you don't spend the money on overshoes and cold remedies or ruin your nice shoes.

I was wearing a pair of Endura MT500 overshoes at the time which got soaked through. It could be that it was a very wet day and puddles above your ankles mean water will find a way in.

Andrew I have found the Northwaves to be a very lovely boot, however I was unable to get my extremely wide feet in. I have in the past tried the MW80 and bought a pair of diadora chili boots again could not get my feet in either of these (even tried 2 sizes up on the MW80's as I was desperate to have a pair). It is unlikely that the RW80's will fit therefore.

This is why I usually stick with Specialized and have a pair of Specialized defrosters which are anything but warm, so would probably stay away from the road version if one exists.

Besides the overshoes recommended (are they now Pro Endura H20, if not where can I get the ones recommended) are there any other winter boots I can consider?? :( :(
