I know all this training business makes us sound a bit serious but, well, some people really are into this bike lark so feel free to talk about all training & self improvement related topics in here

Running Hurts – Lots!!

I have recently joined a running club around the corner from where I live

I have attended 3 sessions so far.

Tuesdays are, I am informed, intervals with a steady run on Thursdays.

The intervals last week were on a reasonably flat stretch of road around 250 – 260 metres long. 12 sets of these were done in around 40 to 45 seconds with around a minute gap between efforts.

The two steady runs I have been with them for have been around 6 – 6.5 miles hilly loop and have taken around 47 – 53 mins.

I am blowing out of my @r$e on these.

Hopefully all this pain and hard work will improve some of my tri times next year.

I know a couple of people out there are pretty good runners. Have any of you guys got any tips?

Just stick with it and you'll improve. Don't increase your mileage too quickly as you could get injured.
Running after cycling is good training for tri as well.

I have joined collingwood. They are based round the corner from my house and seem like they are friendly

Indeed, and add in stupidity as well, I jusr started running again after 12+ years, and in just less than a month I decided to do some fastish (45min) 10k runs. Well I seized up after the last one and had to use support (e.g. one hand on walls, chairs etc) to walk around the house for a day or 2. I'm still nursing an ache in my left leg and will not run again until it goes completely. I was too impatient as I have the cardiovascular capacity to run lots but not the adaptation to the legs yet.

I have to agree with Mr Locke. I have also been going out with a running club and it does hurt, particularly on the calves.

I have been going out with Bromley and Blackheath Harriers. Last time I ran I did 1 mile followed by an 8 mile run run from hayes up to sanderstead and back, then a 1 mile crawl back. I did OK and was in the top half a dozen or so runners, but it took me about 3-4 days to recover. This really was too far for me.

I am finding that my years of cycling has made me aerobically quite fit. I can run quite fast for a long period of time if I really push, but it takes its toll on my legs in the days that follow...Just the same as Kieran...

Question - In training for triathlon, do you chaps do all three disciplines all of the time. I'm doing two of each per week. I have noticed some benefits, but have realised that if I do a hard run or ride, I won't be able to recover for the next days session and it all goes pear shaped...

AS jim said don't increase the milage to soon,also do an easy recovery session the next day after the hard run session and make sure you warm down and stretch after the run,easy to miss out if your pushed for time but vital as i have found out a few times!

Can be if you develop large muscles that are cycle specific. For example if Chris Hoy went running then he'd have very large, and more importanty heavy, muscles smashing up and down on his knees. I usually only run 2 days a week and just did one 30min session a week when I started running again a couple of years ago. I also do the majority off road as well.

You will recover from your running sessions quicker with time so bare with it. I believe that you have to train to recover but for now, spread your harder sessions over the week with your swimming.

What Triathlons are you 2 planning to do?

I have tended to try to do two 5km runs a week, on the dreaded treadmill. Start off slow and then build up by doing intervals. This will get you used to the faster speeds but you won't be doing the whole session that fast until it gets more comfortable, and then you up the general speed and the interval speed.

If you go fast, for example having a go at setting a pb then you will ache the next day, maybe the next two. Running is defo harder on the body, but that is good in some ways as it takes less time to get a decent workout done to keep your general fitness up.

I find that if I have a week or so off running and then come back to it then I can the aches and pains much worse. So basically try and keep it up. I know a few guys who are very serious runners and they run most days of the week. They mix up the intensity, I think by doing a hard session then an easy session or two after, they basically stretch out the running muscles after the hard session, same as a recovery ride in cycling which flushes out the system type thing I think.

Not really thinking about events just yet, but I'll aim to do a spint in the spring followed by an olympic in the summer sometime.

Any recommendations on good events which don't cost massive amounts ?

I was hoping to do the half ironman @ wimbleball. I was on the pre-registration email and went to enter on the morning walking to work only to discover this falls on my first wedding anniversary. The wife wasnt too pleased with this!! It does give me an excuse to put it off another year so i can work on my swimming more.

Hopefully then I will do a half in 2011 with a view to a full distance at some point later (provided I enjoy it still)

Last year I did 2 sprint tris, London and one back home oop north. During the one in october last year I suffered badly due to my asthma - since then I have been taking medication again so hope to smash the time from last year. I think I will now use this as a gauge as to wether I am improving or not from year to year.

I would also like to go back to London as this was where I did my first event except this time do the olympic distance. As yet this is my first planned olympic distance event.

Between these events I hope to get in a few local races - probably around one a month at the most.

I have read good things about Hever castle last year and the East grinstead one would be quite local to me.

East Grinstead is a nice season opener with a pool swim. Reasonable entry fee and just down the road.

Hever was good as well. Easy open water swim with a lumpy 2 lap bike which should suit cyclists.

Running is for people who can't afford bikes. :twisted: That's why it hurts. To give you an incentive to earn the money to buy a bike and get into a less damaging form of exercise.
