Chain fit: I thought Sheldon (RIP) said to put it on large/large then add a link.

I enjoyed the CR more than I expected with the first proper outing of the ancient steel thing. Once you get it up to speed, it rides very smoothly. When the chain doesn't come off.

Back up the A23 with a bit of a tailwind was excellent. Unless you're on a fixie I suppose.

Chain fit - use the old one to measure. Easy peasy.

Small ring, small sprocket, thread through cage, pull to tension so that there is a gap of about one cm or so at base. This makes sure the chain will run smoothly when it has the most slack. It will put the cage at about 45 degrees when at the other extreme of big, big. It will also put it as per Keith's pic but is easier, I think, as there is less tension when marking where to split.

They don't actually "stretch". The rollers wear down and so the whole thing lengthens by about 1/8 inch per foot. I usually get a bradawl, hang both new and old chains off the end of it and split the new one to smae length as the old one less a link. Otherwise I just count how many links are left in the tool box from last time and remove the same amount from the new chain. (Eventually I hope to have enough of these short lengths to make a whole new chain to sell on fleabay :D )

Sounds more like the derailleur was not properly adjusted, either way, school boy errors. I would go back to the shop and get them to sort it all out, free of charge of course. If they won't, find out if he's qualified and speak to the body who certifed him!

Better yet, learn how to do it yourself. Chains, derailleurs, cables, take no time at all to adjust properly.

Definitely the long chain Adam, when in a gear that put enough tension in the chain it ran smoothly. It would be fine if you never wanted to use a sprocket smaller than the 21 :D .

Cheers Sean. Grahame and Marco have been around the block enough times, if they'll excuse the expression, that if they recommend carrying some zip ties and a bit of duck tape in your seat pack then it's worth doing  .

Also, you don't need to go to a shop to shorten a chain. But if you don't know how to do it its pretty hard. Come on Sean, have you got a chain break tool, if so sounds like now is the time to learn how to use it. :D

cheers

Other option, nurse it down to the club run and am sure someone will take the 5 mins to shorten your chain.

Good grief, even I know how to use a chain tool though it's been a long time since I've had too...

Ah, just as I looked the front strut obscured your face - and I'd been concentrating on getting up that little climb.

Why weren't you on the club run....

Or, buy a spoke and bring it and the wheel round to my house one evening this week. Then you could come on the clubrun next Saturday.
