IF YOU THINK YOU'RE HARD ENOUGH! Alternative CR 19.12.09

Postby Jon C C on a Bianchi » Sat Dec 12, 2009 9:38 pm

Hi All

Are bored with the same old ACC club run?? Want something a bit different? :D We'll here's what you've been waiting for! :D :D Last CR before Xmas and it's going to be a CRACKER!

Amy's already posted somewhere on the forum but just to reiterate next Saturday I'm proposing to take a group on an alternative CR out through Edenbidge, Mark Beeech, Sevenoaks Weald. Ide Hill, etc etc. Probably stopping at Westerham for a cuppa and some cake on the way back. Great scenery, mostly quiet country lanes.

It's 50+ miles over quite lumpy terrain. So be prepared for some climbing. It is harder than your average CR but certainly nothing that should put off any Agreeable that can ride a 17.

I'm not riding fast - 16 mph-ish on the flat (and there's not a lot of that about, believe me). We'll climb something over 1000 metres so you're going to need something in your legs for them there hills. Don't laugh but we'll probably average about 13/14 mph. Sort of Audax pace. We'll wait and regroup at the top of every climb etc. And as this is a CR no one gets left behind. :D

I reckon it will take 4 hours ride time + half hour in the cafe + half hour regroup time = 5 hours ish. Leave Couldon south about 9.15 back by 2.30.

All are welcome - be there or be square!

like this idea, how also about doing the club run in reverse? will make the world of difference

is anyone up for organising a ride that goes over the surrey hills? ie, ranmore, coldharbour, ockley? could follow the CR to north holmwood then up to abinger common and holmbury?

I'm a bit bored of the normal club run too...some of us are mountain biking today from westcott to leith tower and beyond

Pete S already does a lot of this and I've had attempts to introduce an alternative route to the cafe going up over Farthing Downs to Charlwood via Bletchingly, Outwood and Salfords to pick up the route back in reverse (see the routes section). We have also done the Box Hill route in reverse to get to the cafe and variations on it.

Seems to be more going on now then when I first tried to get people onto some different roads - an amazing route is to turn right at Hooley and go up Star Lane - you leave the 20/21st century behind and go back a couple of centuries and from town to country in a matter of meters (and a bit of a climb...) and dropping down the otherside is wonderful little network of lanes - just all unfortunately bounded by main roads and conurbations.

The management reserve the right to alter the route without telling anyone!

We'll amend it slightly to go via Westerham for a cafe stop of the way back. :D

Fingers crossed for some half decent weather!!!

Have to say, weather not looking good... Even if it doesn't snow, it might be too icy to venture out...

Hi Folks

Sorry but I have to agree with you Amy. No way is it going to happen. :( I'm really disappointed as I was really looking forward to this. :( Too cold and too risky - it's a longish ride for -3 degrees and on a lot of small untreated and potentially very icy country lanes.

This is just a postponement I will definitely take this alternative CR the next reasonable Saturday (weatherwise) I can. It's a great ride and deserves better weather!

Better safe than sorry - boring but true.

Safe choice to postpone.
I rode to my dentist in Hamsey Green on Thursday moring and it was the scaryiest ride I have done in a very long time. Roads were covered in a very slippy film of black ice. I started avoiding the main roads because of the rush hour traffic but side roads were 10 times worse.

I was pleasently relaxed about the drilling at the dentist after the ride there.
