Ultra compact pumps?

Postby sonic909 » Sun Jan 31, 2010 12:53 pm

After a sturdy light pump... frame mountable?

Anyone got any suggestions? can you get pumps the size of like a biro?

I dont intend to use it unless its an emergency so i dont mind it taking an hour to actually pump up!

One of these for a quick inflation and one cartridge is held in the case (which stops it freezing to your hands when used) and the trigger operation makes control easier. Very small, just tuck it in your pocket or saddle bag, or with a bit of rubber and a strap attach it to your seatpost. I carry one on longer TTs to inflate a tub if I've had a puncture. Only inflates once though so use if you want to get on your way quicker, and don't only have this or if you get a second puncture you'll be stuffing the tyre with grass to try and get you home.

One of these as a mini pump. It's not tiny, tiny, but is very small. For a mini pump it's not actually that bad and can inflate a road tyre to a decent pressure to continue riding properly, not just getting home. It comes with a little clip that attaches to the bottle cage mounts but I just stick it in one of my pockets.

Sonic
I have used the cartridges in the past and they are very good, however puntures tend to come in bunches and I have been out with two cartridges and not carrying a pump only to have 3 punctures and not enough cartridges.

Also I have forgotten to take my mini pump and have had puntures. So I would go with the 2nd option offered by Andrew attached to the frame or a pump I have found small but very efficient at quick inflations is this one - http://www.corridori.co.uk/gbu0-prodshow/47262005.html - Great service at Corridori too.

I dunno, that sounds like you haven't found the source of the original puncture to me

Yep, say hi to Paul 'Smiffy' Smith when you're in next. He was hoping his girlfriend was going to pop in the other week when I was there on the tourer because he wanted to show her what I travelled with when I went cycle touring - two panniers, a small rackpack and a handle bar bag. She can beat him up the hills but she hasn't got the hang of travelling light...

As for pumps, I always have a Zefal tucked discreetly on the rear stay of all my bikes - small but decent enough even for me to get the tyres up hard enough to continue on.

Sonic, I know you said compact frame mountable pumps and this one is only covers the frame mountable aspect but the Topeak Road Master Blaster is well made and sits fairly discreetly under the top tube without a bracket. You may like compact pumps and pumping up your tyres in a mere 150 strokes to get 80psi, but trust me once you've used one of these or a Zefal version you will never look back.

One of the main problems with mini-pumps is that you hardly ever get the tyre back up to the right pressure as you would with a track pump - which is not only slower but also a softer tyre is often more likely to puncture again. Check it out below - it's reduced as well.

The only downside with carrying one of these is that most people end up borrowing it when the group punctures. However that way you can build up lots of tea & cake credits from those who borrow it ;-) Also if I'm going away now I don't tend to take a track pump as this one does the job fine as well.

Go on,,break with convention and get a proper pump I dare you!

Check out the Lezyne pumps, I think they are on Wiggle. You can get a very small one, which I now have and it is pretty good. Has a detachable hose which helps to avoid the issue of breaking the valve that you get with the ones that you have to hold onto the valve when you pump. I am pretty pleased with it can get up to a high psi, used to use a mini track pump but after a few years have decided it is too long and heavy to lug around and am fed up with pumping up everyone elses tyres with it as it was so good.

Cheers

I only take the mini pump on the good bike because with my frame size I can't fit a frame pump under the top tube and have 2 bottles. Commuter/winter and fixed I use a zefal and have a side opening cage on the commuter. A proper pump does make life so much easier, and yes if I'm on the good bike and someone has a proper pump I borrow that :D

Alternatively save weight and money by simply riding with Andrew on every ride - make sure he's not on his good bike though!

One top tip - when you pump up the tyre, brace the wheel against a fixed object (tree, gate, Andrew's thigh). You get far more power to your pump for less effort plus the wheel is less likely to move around and risk snapping/ bending the valve. Works a treat and it only took me about 15 years to cotton onto that one

Brace against my thigh while pumping  I refuse to stop at the next puncture.

I have a Topeak frame pump. Whenever someone puntures on the CR, however many mini-pumps there are mine is the one that gets used. Pumps to proper pressure very quickly. I only use the minipump on the mtb as it's fine for 40-50 psi

Another vote here. Very little issue pumping up both my tyre and that of another bloke who punctured 5 mins later at the same spot the other day. Neat design, looks good on the bike.
