well, looks like I didn't miss much, hope you heal up quickly Sylv. I went out Sunday morning instead on the ride of the falling leaves route, I think Sunday was a little warmer. Very few cyclists out though, at one point I got off my bike and walked due to sheet ice at a junction and later turned back from the minor roads due to ice, but managed almost 3 hours. I had to get out as no cycling next week :( .

How are you other guys patching up? Got to say, this Duorderm is not cheap but it does wonders. I could only find it in a large Boots not small chemists.

No need to say though, I didn't ride in this morning.

I missed the club run on Sat and went out yesterday. Thought it was a bit warmer so went down Featherbed Lane to the White Bear and then chucked a left at the junction. Went round the S bends and then slowed for the junction to find I was on black ice!
Back wheel came round and I was on my @rse! Pretty slow tumble so no damage to the bike or my clothing but did manage to bang my elbow, shoulder and thigh. How is it possible to get gravel rash on my legs without ripping my tights??!!
Went on the main roads after that which seemed ok. Bit sore today though.....

I'm fine Sylv, not a bruise or a mark on me. Looks like its not true when they say the bigger you are the harder you fall. Sorry you guys are suffering, I really was lucky by the looks of things. Crashing at the speed we did and getting away with it is a lucky escape me thinks.

I drove to Paul Hones house to drop something off Saturday morning, had the bike in the back ready for the clubrun.

My van was slipping on the way up to Coulsdon on the hill, the side roads looked treacherous to me and the main roads had a dusting of snow and ice on the inside near the gutter.

I decided not to ride the CR so Paul and I didn't! and I'm not one to wimp out. I'm glad we made that decision judging by this thread.

Hope everyone heals up soon, Saturday was definitely a MTB day.

[quote]I then headed off to the station and was frankly a bit shocked at the low turn out. Where was everyone?

Friction through the tights.

Pretty good thanks Sylv - rash on right hip with a bruise that's actually starting to look a bit like The Messiah  Oh and the elbows are a bit sore from my 'ahem' fall on my way to the CR. I don't know what others think but if we could do that all again, same 25mph, I can record it for Sylv  .... One of you (not sure which one) slid about 3km on your rear whilst assuming the driving posture, accept no car! It was dazzling (apart from the poor finish where points were doubtless deducted).

30+ out in weather as it was on Saturday is a good result in my opinion.
My ride from Belmont to Coulsdon through lanes in the dusting of snow was "interesting" to say the least.
Geat ride and good food for lunch afterwards at the new cafe in Coulsdon Nonna Rossas!

Last week, the first this year with reasonable weather, we had 70+ out!

So Phil - am I right in concluding you think it's a good thing that you had 30+ riders out on Saturday on icy roads? If you had more riders - as it sounds like you wanted - I guarantee you would be hearing tales of more than just 5 fallers.

Bottom line is that almost every other cycling club I know of cancelled their road rides at the weekend- deciding "better safe than sorry". ACC still went ahead and had a nasty crash. Hell of Ashdown also went ahead on original route and had absolutely loads of crashes including 2 collarbones, broken thumb and lots of road rash & bruises not to mention ripped expensive jackets / tights. Who was right - those who cancelled the rides or those who went ahead with organised rides in large groups? You decide, I can't be bother to comment further. :(

Marcus, as Sean has already stated we are adults who have the responsibility to make the decision to go out on a CR or not. I was one of those 30 riders who made the decision to go out. Although the weather was cold, the consensus was that the main roads were clear of any ice which they were. No one within ACC forces anyone to go out, there is no pressure to turn up to any CR or a event like the Hell of Ashdown.
So I am not sure why you keep pointing the finger at ACC on what in essence is a individuals decision at the end of the day. Accidents happen unfortunately whatever the weather.

He's Norwood Paragon, he's only jealous.

Marcus, next time I'm not looking after your girlfriend on the Hilly 50 - I might be too dangerous...

As far as I'm concerned both groups of riders came off in unavoidable circumstances. A sheet of black ice across a road is rather unavoidable, most of the time it was only patchy and if you didn't panic if you hit it, you were over and still upright afterwards. Oh and you can avoid roads that you know get wet with run-off but water leaks are rather more difficult to predict...

You could say that they were both unlucky and lucky....
