WOW!! Great idea! ACC Time Trial Series - Age Standards?

Postby Jon C C on a Bianchi » Thu Feb 04, 2010 8:21 pm

Hi All

Here's a great and probably unoriginal idea. Just think it would be nice if we could have a prize for best time under age standard for our club Tuesday TTs. I know what you're thinking - I'm trying to desperately wangle a medal somehow (and you might be right!  ) - but take this in good faith, please. We're a club that rightly prides itself on being open and inclusive - catering for all shapes and sizes. We have a lot of 'less young' riders in the club and giving them (us) something to ride for would, well,... be inclusive. As we get older it gets harder to beat handicap (unless you're John Lovell of course) We have age standard prizes for our open TTs so why not for the club ones? Talking about John Lovell we could even have a trophy for the best under age standard over the series and call it the.... John Lovell Trophy! and why not? :D

What does anyone else think? Is this a goer? How do I go about sorting this?

I'm 91 and despite my declaration of interest I have absolutely no chance of winning an age standard medal. Anyway, what next? does this have to go to committee? Some kind of formal proposal? and can we just go ahead and do it?
There would be a cost implication - more medals of course and a trophy for the best ride of the season. Who pays?

I think it's a good idea. it just need formulating a bit more into a proposal for the next committee meeting, which is in about a month or so from now.
Things to decide are:
1) Whether it's medals for each event (and how many i.e. just one for best performance, or gold silver bronze, or for everyone who beats their age standard) or just for best performance of the season. Or do we award a trophy?
2) How to set a standard for the Bletchingley course which is a non-standard distance and a hilly one.
3) Prize money as well as medals (like the handicap awards)?
etc

Whatever the agreed set of rules are, they need to be fairly simple to keep the competition understandable and the admin manageable.

Err, most trophies named after people are set up after the person has moved on to another place (and I don't mean the Isle of Wight).

I didn't realise you had to be dead to get a trophy named after you in cycling!!! How odd! There's a tradition of naming some trophies in honour of people in most other sports while they're still alive e.g.

the Football World Cup was renamed in honour of Jules Rimet in 1946. He died in 1956 - i.e. 10 years later! perhaps they were trying to tell him something? anyway, I'm sure there are loads of other examples.

I wouldn't, however, want the naming of a trophy to become a contentious issue that stops the whole show - if there are any other more worthy names - perhaps of those that have figuratively speaking, moved further afield than the IoW, let's go for them. :D
