Brighton return

Postby LeeS » Tue Feb 09, 2010 3:14 pm

I have some work commitments over the next ten days or so that is going to keep me off my bike for a while so I have rearranged my schedule so that I have this Friday off . My plan is to go to Brighton on the A22, B2028 , B2112, up Ditchling , and on to the seafront and then back. Can anybody give me a respectable time to aim for?
Weather wise I think Friday is going to be fairly clear so if anybody happens to have Friday off and they fancy a jaunt let me know.

I saw that on the other thread but Friday looked clear and bright. Probably depends on what gets dumped on Thursday night.

Depending on whether the weather makes it doable or not a nice way back is to go along the seafront to Shorham and then cut through the airport. When you come out the other side at the A27 go right and immediate left up the laney road called Coombes Road, follow this all the way through to Steyning, through Steyning and then pick up the B2135/Horsham Road. You can then cut through the lanes, just keep heading north, and pick up the CR route after Horsham at Rusper.

It's a cracking ride back that way, normally very quiet roads.

Depend where you live but a Brighton and back is normally about 100 miles for me on a fairly laney route, It's not a flat ride so on your tod in this weather with the likely wind I think 6 hours for the ton would be a reasonable time. That's a bit under 17s average.

Thanks Andrew. I 'll look that route up . I've done the return on the route I mentioned before which came out at 93 miles . Weather permiting, if I can keep up 17-18mph I 'll be quite chuffed and its my last ride for about 10 days so I'll put my legs into it and see what happens.Plenty of glucose tablets before hand I think.

Take food/energy bars too. Even with a nosh-up at the caff on the seafront I always seem to flag around Rusper.

Well he asked for a target  , could be a great ride if the wind is up Lee as you can end up riding in to a block head wind for long stretches on a Winter Brighton run. If Metcheck's right then it could be a tough return journey.

Thanks George. You've lowered the bar enough for me to have half a chance of hitting a target.

My 4.5 hours was dreamed up at my desk, on a calculator. Go with what George and others have said, and watch out for ice (see how our threads seamlessly intertwine?)

2 weeks ago I rode to Brighton in 3hours into the wind and retuned with the wind in 2.45 but it was bitterly cold and wet so had to stop a couple of time to warm my fingers up on the way back.
Believe me I wasn't hanging around either:wink:

Left at 7.50 in the rain and then sleet which perhaps wasn't the shrewdist move but if I didn't make a start early I probably wouldn't have gone . My feet were numb by South Godstone but it brightened shortly afterwards. Got to the seafront in 2hrs 50 and returned in 3hrs 5mins and clocked up 93 miles.Got caught on a few red lights so if that can be taken into account M'lud I'd be grateful.
