Tape to digital converter?

Postby Sylv » Tue Feb 23, 2010 10:07 am

Does anyone have one of these that they would be happy to lend/rent?

Cheers

I could do with one of those - but once you've done your copying it's not going to get used.

Yes I have a Yahama tape deck
But tapes won't last forever
and would be handier on mp3 files
But true once you're done with it not much use with the apparel- you could buy mine for £30 Rogan : )
There's also this stuff for cheaper: http://www.musicalitysoftware.com/en-GB/Demo

Can you plug your Yamaha tape deck into your PC's audio input and then use free software like Audacity to chop it up and encode?

yeah I meant why not hook the tape deck up to your PC, then you can capture the audio spending as long as you like twiddling with it. and compress it down to MP3 or FLAC or whatever you fancy after you've finished cutting/playing about.
should be able to do it all with opensource software I'd have thought.

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ is supposed to be pretty good, haven't tried it myself though.

Garage band comes free with Ilife so if you've got a mac you've probably got it already and is dead simple to use.

I was going to offer advice and even loan of cables from my vast repository of different audio and computer connectors, but to be quite honest it's far, far easier to just illegally download the music that you've already paid for than it is to try and convert vinyl or cassettes to MP3.

(The above should not be construed as incitement to do anything illegal)

Sure or just buy the CD so you get an uncompressed version.

on the other hand if you've got recordings on tape that you've made yourself, perhaps interviews/ lectures/ some wacky obscure live session etc. then it's still something you might want to do.
