Yes precisely Ivor. I got Audacity now but still have to get the wiring rerouted to get the sound from the stereo to the pc (at the moment it's the other way round).

I forgot to mention, I know when a mate got the Ion USB turntable a couple of years ago, the software it was supplied with was a version of Audacity.

Does the software clean the signal to eliminate any tape hiss?

Cool... so all my early 80s party cassettes I taped off the radio can be given a new lease of life.

I used to record John Peel's Festive 50 every year, and lots of bits and bobs from the show throughout the year. I've still got the tapes kicking around - (increasingly under threat from a marauding Albert, I might add  ). It'd be great to transfer these to something more permanent. Hmm...

And you could even edit back the record to the correct playing speed .. or would that take out some of the charm

I've used Audacity to convert vinyl and tape to digital formats (FLAC, mp3, etc.)

It works a treat :)

Being a numpty i've given up for now as cannot seem to get the sound from stereo into the pc despite seemingly doing it right with the wiring - nothing happens in audacity

In the meantime would someone be able to convert a song on youtube to a mp3?

cheers

Dont want to speak out of turn Sylv - something worth checking though.

Go into the Audacity Preferences and make sure that the audio input is at the correct setting for both playback and recording devices - that took me a while to sort out first time.

You can check if Audacity is receiving the audio by selecting audio playthrough.

Not sure why everyone wants to eliminate the crackle and hiss though - that's the charm of the old stuff.
