Sonic, don't always believe a higher gear means you go faster :x

I learnt that long ago, chasing an old family friend. It wasn't till I realised that it was too hard work pushing a big gear and dropped down a couple which increased my cadence that I found myself keeping up quite easily.

Of course the stronger you get the bigger the gear you can ride that way :D

Felt a bit queasy yesterday so went with the 17s but I seemed to be riding so much better that I felt pretty comfortable for the most part. Speed seemed a bit up on the group label but that's because we had Mr Avery on the front and he's one of those riders with only two settings - stop and go :wink: My advice, Jon, ride with the 18s!

It was especially hard going at the start as a few of us got split off the back by the bus just after the start and with the head wind and Jon and Brian going for it on the front, it took me awhile to drag myself back in to the group, thankfully a red light helped. On the whole the group was well behaved and we managed to pull it together most of the way down past Rusper Golf Course. I think it was a bit of a shock to the new guy, Duncan, but he seemed to be doing OK - definitely not off the back.

We were split apart on the Rusper drag as we had Jon and Brian on the front again but we all turned off at Partridge and got to the cafe to find only a few riders there. You see, Ant? I had expected that you would catch my group up after we saw you with the puncture. In fact all the groups seemed to turn up well spaced out - timewise that is, though I can't vouch for their state of mind :lol: I think it's the first time in ages we had a head wind down to Charlwood.

Of course, it meant we were blown nicely back to Coulsdon. I left fairly early with Nigel, Mike and Phil Hawkes - and was that a Peter? Peter was belting along and dragged us all behind until we dropped off at various stages though we all seemed to stay within a couple miles of each other. Phil and I stayed pretty close and I towed him from Redhill through Merstham and up the drag where we swapped places at the top. But Phil kept slowing down so I went round him and whipped it up a bit the road being quiet enough for a good bit of speed. We swapped round for a bit but I just couldn't keep up with Phil down the hill - gravity favouring the heavier rider and I just ran out of gears to push :lol:

It's no good, I have to ask. Steve, did you manage to excavate your bike out from under that pile?! I had thought about that problem in advance and had placed my bike in such away that there were only two bikes on top and were relatively easy to extricate mine!

My chain unshipped coming out of Merstham - which I blame for everything. (Maybe I should spend some time getting that adjustment right)

I (finally) took a turn on the front on the A23, conscious of not going too fast cos my legs were fresh. Then one time I check over my left shoulder to make sure Amy's still there and she's gone. Looked forward again and she's streaking past me on the right. So I did the gentlemanly thing and fell in behind until she tired and then went off myself. As soon as the road turned slightly uphill on the bus lane, she breezed past me again. But the downhill finish is the friend of the fat bloke.

Not sure if it was the two double-espressos, but I bonked completely going back up to Banstead. Maybe I should've said yes to the grappa.

Sonic, good effort my man. Riding with fast riders is the best way to make yourself work harder and ride faster. Keeping up with Paul H at the moment is quite a big ask, have a feeling that he is trying to peak for something early season as he is flying. He will soon run out of gas and we can give him a kicking.

Thats for sure :D At least you have the balls too give it a go, you'll get there. I'd suggest hanging out with the 19's for a bit, no one will shout at you if you want to do a little more work than anyone else by working a bit harder and longer on the front, good way of improving.

I started where you are and just rode myself faster by working up through the groups quickly then just burying myself in the TG. As Marek says, riding with fast riders is the best way to make yourself work harder and ride faster, worked for me and many besides. Good luck.

I ventured into the training group and started to really improve last year. It's no surprise when you're riding on your limit against guys that are indeed fitter. It's also no surprise under those circumstances you get dropped.
When you get an opportunity to get on the front and go for an attack for me there's no better clubrun. If I'm honest I prefered the training group to racing.

If you wanna race then I would strongly recommend the training group. I'm no expert just another a chubby little loser who's been dropped by the Training Group.

The training group is one spicy dish but stick with it. Hopefully see you on Saturday.

Hey Keith, hope it wasn't too unpleasant for you. Sorry I thought with such a strong headwind you might be able to hang on if hiding at the back. But with Keith II, Paul (peaking too early :lol: )and Dave driving the pace it would still have been hard work for a first timer. By the dual carriageway I was just hanging on, and was probably lucky to get a puncture before the lanes, where I usually get dropped these days. I had 233w average for the whole ride which includes a 10 miles warmup / cool down ride to CSS ..

As said make sure you learn to be confident enough to ride 10 inches from someone's wheel, and do a few runs with the 19s before you next give it a try.

Yes this was an attempt at humour. I know how to avoid this next week - let's go on a mtb ride - I should have my Litespeed rebuilt by then just need to get forks back from Howard and cabling done, eager to try it out. Oh and probably some cool new shoes to try on. How about Sunday - will post it

Ive done less cycling this winter so am at best the same level than previous years and am planning to "peak" in september. I do however always keep myself ticking over throughout the year unlike some others.

The headwind didnt make it easy for some riders and Richard our newbie 3rd cat learnt a few lessons that day.

Sonic - Well done for trying and keep training. When you get fit enough to stay with us to the Reigate steps, Im sure we could wait for you if you get dropped going up them.

Oh, a Sunday MTB ride, I might be up for it as Saturday I'll be off watching some karate tournament thingy with the family. haven't had the MTB out in a while and I need to justify it's existence.
