ACC Trip to Mallorca – 29 April to 6 May
A slightly delayed report on ACC’s recent week in Mallorca.
18 riders and 4 partners travelled to Port de Pollensa in the North East corner of the island.
It’s an excellent base for cycling, with access to a range of routes from flat, through rolling roads to mountains. Port de Pollensa has a large number of bike hire shops, although some of our group took their own bikes. And our hotel, the Puerto Azul is well set up for cyclists, with a huge safe garage area for bikes and great buffet food for breakfast and dinner.
The trip was organised by Lesley Wilkinson and Del Cobb. We mainly rode as 2 groups to make sure that everybody could enjoy riding at a pace they were comfortable with. Big thanks to Belinda Wigmore and Martin Cripps for organising the ‘Elite 17s’ group!
We did have an ACC day, where we rode as one big group, all in ACC club kit. We were mostly well behaved, but with so many ride leaders armed with GPX files, there was some inevitable ‘confusion’ at a few junctions.
We were lucky with the weather. Despite forecasting some rain early in the week, it stayed almost dry and sunny. The temperature was pleasant, in the low 20s for most of the week.
There were a few mountain rides, with some of the group tackling the famous Sa Calobra climb for the first time. But there were also some more laid back rides, through the lanes that criss cross Mallorca and help make it such a great place to ride.
And as importantly, we found a new craft beer outlet, essential for celebrating the end of the day’s ride and to start the carb loading for the next day.
And one of the high points was when Ron Salter joined the Abba tribute band on stage for a night they will never forget!
Everyone agreed the trip was a huge success. It must have been as one of the non cycling partners, Helen Stanley, hired a bike and enjoyed herself so much, she decided to join ACC!
It’s quite possible we’ll run this again next year, so if you’re interested keep a watch out for the details, or contact us to let us know of your interest.
