Addiscombe goes to Herne Hill
Report by Paul Hone
17 of us attended a coached 2 hour training session on 3 June at the Herne Hill Track. The session was geared for newcomers to the track of all abilities where we were coached in the use of a fixed wheel bike and the basic skills required to safely ride on a banked track.
After the basics we performed various drills including a form of team pursuit where each rider would ride at the front for half a lap then swing up the bank and back down onto the back of the group which was particularly good fun.
Another drill was the “animal” where we had to leave the gap the same width as the animal the coaches shouted at us as we went past – this didn’t go particularly well as we all seemed to have different opinions how long a Donkey was, whether the Meerkat was on all fours or 2 and some us know some very big Moose!
The final drill was the flying Lap where we raced against one other rider who started on the opposite side of the track with Ian disrespecting the Captain by beating him.
It was also great to see long time member Keith Knight there with his usual positivity and enthusiastic support who also leant me his track bike for the session.
All this fun was at the cost of £17 which included the hire of a track bike if required.
Big thanks to Alan Malarkey for organising a very enjoyable club event.
