Alternatives Ride – Saturday 14th September 2019
This Saturday is looking like a pleasant day and so a good opportunity to go further afield. A location we have never been to is the Speckled Hen at Shamley Green near Cranleigh. This is a 57 mile ride starting at Coulsdon South Station at 9am and taking us through the heart of the Surrey Hills, Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The ride takes us through Chipstead (avoiding the Cane Hill estate this time!!), Walton-on-the-Hill, Hedley, along the peaceful Little Swizerland, past the bottom of Box Hill’s Zig Zag Road, and up the Ranmore climb (or alternatively through the private grounds of the Denbies Wine Estate), up to the top of Ranmore Common to take us well into Surrey Hills teritory. Sticking to the top of Ranmore Common, the rides heads towards East Horsley, before turning off for Shere. A small climb out of Shere takes over to Farley Green and then over to Shamley Green for a well deserved beverage and/or elevensis at the Speckled Hen cafe (a sister cafe to the Dabbling Duck at Shere).
The journey home heads towards Cranleigh before heading off towards Ewhurst, then along the foot of the Green Sand Ridge on the Ockley Road over to Capel then Newdigate and along familiar roads back towards Reigate and the quick slog home through Merstham and finally Coulsdon.
This is medium paced ride (equivalent to the 17mph group), waiting for stragglers at the top of drags and climbs.
This is the route with gpx download option…
