Alternatives Ride – Saturday 21st September 2019
Saturday is looking like a another pleasant day and so a longer than usual ride is a must. Another location we have never stopped at before is the Java and Jazz cafe at Forest Row near East Grinstead. This is a 55 mile ride starting at Coulsdon South Station at 9am and taking us directly south towards the Ashdown Forest.
The ride starts with a nice warm-up climb over Farthing Down, drops down the North Downs into Bletchingley, then over to Smallfields, Copthorne and a gentle climb up to Turners Hill for a small breather before heading over to the Ashdown Forest via Sharpthorne and Wych Cross.
The road along the top of the Weald has some amazing views across the forest worth stopping for. The infamous “Wall” is just down the road, but we will leave that for another day, and turn off for a decent into Forest Row to the cafe stop.
Being a hot dry day, makes conditions for the Forest Way / Worth Way path along the disused railway line ideal for an interesting route home. After 6 or 7 miles and briefly passing through East Grinstead centre, we emerge out at Crawley Down and back to sharing the roads with cars. Over to New Chapel, Blindley Heath, Til Burstow, and then Bletchingley for the home run through Merstham and finally Coulsdon.
This is medium paced ride (equivalent to the 17mph group), waiting for stragglers at the top of drags and climbs.
