Any advice for beginning a structured training programme?

I know all this training business makes us sound a bit serious but, well, some people really are into this bike lark so feel free to talk about all training & self improvement related topics in here

Andrew you need to think about fertiliser mate, stretching is all well and good, but you need to work on these things gradually. You;ll get much better quality growth using fertiliser as opposed to taking the quick option of stretching.

Anyhow it is not all its cracked up to be, heavier body and bike means a lot more to lug up the hills (well thats my excuse).

Cheers

So Rob wat is the current general consensus about this guy's views on lactic acid?

Either way though, is it not commonly accepted that it should pay to train the body to tolerate the pain that starts occuring at a certain level of intensity, whether or not the pain is caused by lactic acid?

Thanks everyone :P

LOL at the cans of worms I've opened here :D but it is all great. Just kind of debate I need to hear. Lots more on here since I last had time to look in. I am going to print it read through later on so apologies for a mass thanks. I will answer individual questions when I've processed it all.

Yesterday I did (on turbo trainer) 2 mins warm up at 85-95 cadence, then 5 x 2 min intervals keeping cadence above 100 and speed over 20mph with 2 min recoveries (cadence 85-95), 2 x 4 min intervals the same with 2 min recoveries and finishing with 5 min cool down (same as warm-up and recoveries).
Is that along the right kind of lines? I will increase interval length and resistence etc as I progress. I do 1 x 30 min hard session, 2 x 1 hour general ride with some hard in (e.g. a few hill repeats when I see a nice one) and a long ride at the weekend. I may add in a second 30 min hard session a week as I am feeling the current training load could be increased a bit, especially on the bike.
I have a hill block but I'm sure I am right in presuming this is only for the feel of a hill, it won't make any difference to the work-out?
I am definately keen to do some TTs as soon as I can get to one. Do I need full AAC kit or is just a jersey OK?

Thanks again
Sarah

You don't actually need any ACC kit so don't let stop you if finances are tight. The only rule I am aware of is that you can only ride in either your club/team kit, or plain kit. So I can't ride about in CSC kit trying to pretend I'm Cancellara  (until someone sees the time anyway).

Of course it's nice to ride events in club kit and it helps other members spot you at the HQ so you'll have a club mate to chat to. Also if it's an Addiscombe promotion all the marshals will give you a shout (of encouragement  ), and anyone who may be passing on a ride will give you a shout. The legend that is Jim often rides by the local TT courses to give any members a shout, the man is one of my heroes - in his 80s yet still out on his bike all the time, when he's not playing tennis. The other week he was still out in the pouring rain to cheer us on as we went by in an early season TT :D .

Thanks Andrew :) I will get a jersey and wear it with my shorts then (when GB get some more small ones in stock) It is always nice to be in club kit and I will need a second jersey come the summer anyway. I am pleased to hear you don't need to buy the whole thing though!

Don't brace yourself - I've been waiting for one for three months now. They did tell me (again) that they were expecting a delivery soon though.

[quote="Andrew G"]The only rule I am aware of is that you can only ride in either your club/team kit, or plain kit.

Just to clarify that point, it can have the clothing manufacturers name displayed on it (e.g. Altura etc) but not a slogan (e.g. Marmite etc)

Indeed, it was fantastic to see him there. I did wonder at the time who this person was cheering me on!

Also for track and road:

TR 8.1.9
In Road and Track events, Youth, Fourth and Provisional category licence holders and BC non licence holders will be allowed to wear any suitable clothing whilst competing in events under the Technical Regulations of the Federation, including that bearing registered or unregistered advertising except in the case of National Championships

So for 3rd cats and above:

TR 8.1.6

When competing under these Regulations riders (other than as provided in T.R. 8.1.8 and 8.1.9) shall wear Club or Region registered design and colours, as is appropriate
