2 x 20's ouch!

I know all this training business makes us sound a bit serious but, well, some people really are into this bike lark so feel free to talk about all training & self improvement related topics in here

2 x 20's ouch!

No ground breaking advice, dietery tips or shocks from the world of medical research where some one has discovered that too much training causes excessive facial hair, just some waffle as I dont usually post here as I dont usually train!
Yesterday did my first 2 x 20 intervals on the Newdigate circuit.
So for what its worth, heres some numbers from my new toy.... Ist interval av HR 173 max 179, 2nd one 171 ave max 178.

What exactly is a 2x20 interval? is that just flat out for 20 minutes twice with a bit of a break in the middle?

Orv, that in a nutshell is more or less it. Knowing your max(ish) heart rate means you can work out your threshold level (not sure of the percentage below your max this is, but some one will) and it's this level of intensity you try and maintain for 20 minutes. I think its 20 minutes as this is about all you can do at threshold. You get a 5 min break inbetween each one.

Woah! Re-reading this Paul, you have got some kind of elastic heart there.

Just did my first 2 x 20 on a turbo (borrowed off Marek) yesterday. Tried one last week on the road and v inconsistent trying to get the HR up to required level and keep it there, so turbo our from under the kitchen table and set up.

God it was hard! Much much much much much much harder than doing it on the road.

And I am only doing HR ranges 153- 166 and 156 - 168!!!!!

That was hard enough God help me. I was a puddle, the bike was a puddle, the floor under the bike was a puddle. I looked sunburned for half an hour I was so pink. Or maybe I was green

Lotta work to do then.........sigh.

Hey well done Michelle. The big big factor to remember with turbo training is cooling. Make sure you have a really good powerful fan. If you can't replicate the breeze on the road but you can certainly try. The perceived exertion riding the turbo without cooling is quite intense and will stymie your efforts whether you realise it or not.

STOP WORRYING ABOUT WHAT YOUR HEART RATE IS DOING!!!!!
RIDE AT WHAT FEELS LIKE 'RACE PACE' (tt OR rr) OR CLOSE TO RACE PACE
ITS NICE TO HAVE AN IDEA WHAT YOU AVERAGE HEART RATE IS DOING FROM TIME TO TIME BUT LET POWER, TRAINER SPEED OR PLAIN OLD 'PERCEIVED EXERTION' GOVERN YOUR EFFORTS :D :D
HEART RATE IS FAR TOO SENSITIVE (HYDRATION, FATIGUE, ANXIETY, HEAT, LACK OF SLEEP, INCREASED FITNESS, ILLNESS ETC WILL ALL AFFECT HEART RATE POSITIVELY OR NEGATIVELY). iF OF COURSE YOU CAN KEEP ALL THE ABOVE CONSISTENT WHICH I ACCEPT SOME PEOPLE CAN DO THEN FINE :D

Toks, shhhhhh!

No I know you get all het up about HR but really, I am doing it for a reason.

Anyway, felt harder than race pace. I reckon I was too hot...

Ha Ha don't be silly I never read it like that at all :D

Just to qualify re Heart rate av and 2 x 20's. A couple of years ago I stuck religously to 165-170bpms whenever I felt tired, really strong or whatever. After two months I found having taken off a couple of days this av heart rate was easy to maintain but when really really fit it could be hard to get my heart rate in to that zone despite feeling good.

So what am I saying? Unless you've got a power meter try and use Perceived Exertion (Feel) as your true guide for 'threshold efforts' and heart rate as a reference point.

Oh and with VO2max intervals, 3-6mins ,heart rate can really stuff up your training. You may be able to hit 170BPM's in your fisrt two reps but the next couple you may only reach 167 or even hit 173BPM's. Whats important is your speed/power if your religously sticking to heart rate zones you're gonna either push yourself deeply into the red or perhaps not work hard enough.

Finally did I tell you the one about the 4th cat who pulled out of a race cause his heart rate went above 92%. And no it wasn't me :D

The reason you can't get your Hr is your tired? But which system have you tired?

Metabollic?
Neurologic?
Neuromuscular?
Respiratory?
Cardiovascular?

Come back and tell me?

A powemeter won't tell you the above that's for sure!

Now this is getting into the realms of 'me no understandee'.

Just trying a bit of structured training ( or is that straining) as have some really BIG events to do this year, rather than riding round and round my hill circuit and trying to get ' more miles on the legs' which is all I did last year.

Doesn't seem to be too bad so far, come back from 9 weeks off the bike, done 3 weeks on it, and managed to cling on to the 19s nearly all the way to the cafe.

I was talking in general terms Toks, so not you or Michelle.

Hope that clears the matter.
