Drive train failure

Major mechanical today - it seems the quick link on the chain broke on one sid, got caught in the rear mech, broke the hanger and smashed the rear mech.

I am replacing the chain with shimano (no quick link as breakage has happened before on mountain bike) and rear mech.

Rear cassette seems ok, however should I replace this too?

Odd breakage. I see no reason to change the cassette unless it's damaged which is unlikely or unless the chain had been on a long time and matched the cassette.

Chain and cassette less than 15 months old - checked chain wear last week and was well within .75.

Odd. I have been using KMCs with quick links for ages without trouble. Maybe I'm not laying down enough power.

A nearly 15 month old chain! You need to do more miles mate .
I use KMC and never had a problem with them, only time was on the hill climb on tandem with PVT last year when one exploded but there was a lot of force going through it.

If it broke on one side might be due to "cross chaining" running small ring at front and back or big ring front and back, would put stress on it. Have used them and been fine.

Anecdotal evidence to be sure, but I've had a couple of failures of KMC quick links. I use SRAM ones now.
