Beastway # 4 results & reports

Another fine dry night at Eastway, just a few puddles from the previous night's storms.

Simon 2nd/17 Singlespeed,
Sylvain 4th/42 Masters (Joel 7th),
Grahame 29th/32 Veterans

From Grahame:

"Well, that was the worst I've felt on a bike for as long as I can remember (so at least 10 minutes, then). Right from the whistle my heart was racing, but I wasn't. I don't think I was ever above cruising speed, and just couldn't get the legs moving. I think I finished dead last in the old gimmers class. " (not you didn't!)

From Simon:

"Well, well, well. Last nights Single Speed category was blown
apart by Kurt Warner's explosive attack at the end of Lap 4.

Alistair Brown and I were huffing and puffing on foot up the
steepest bank at the eastern end of the course and Kurt gracefully
threaded his way through a melee of riders.

I chased Kurt hard but lost sight of him near the end of the last
lap and that was it.

I had chased Ally Rowe hard during the first lap; learning from
last weeks laid-back attitude. We played cat and mouse for a bit,
I went to take my turn in front and felt OK so pushed and made it
stick.

When I checked over my shoulder on Lap 4 to see Ally not 10s
behind and Alistair breathing down my neck I thought I was in for
the same story as the first few rounds where Ally and Alistair
save the best for a hard effort on the last lap.

Then comes along Kurt and blows it apart.

Should be exciting racing through rest of the series; Stuart Jones
(I think) is back on his green Spot, he was a force to be reckoned
with in 2004. Also Steve Mahon was looking good for third last
week until he lost his chain in the last half a lap".

From Sylvain:

"I suffered too last night. Those two long road sections were one too many for me, and it was a drag trying to keep up with the guys at the front, some of which are 1st cat on the road. The climbs seemed to have multiplied too, I knew I was in trouble when I failed to overtake a couple of youths on one of them!

Matt Lewis took the early lead, chased by Joel, Stuart Spies, Simon Turner, Mark Neill and myself. Then Mark upped the pace and only Simon managed to stay right on his wheel, to eventually win his third round in a row. Joel and Matt then fell back, Stuart got ahead and went chasing Simon, and I was back on Mark's wheel. Had nothing left to try overtake him at the end though.

Hardly got any time to drink either. Thankfully the cramp didn't kick in till I went through the chicanes after the finish! Still have a knot in my right leg though despite massage."

From Joel (and by memory) "I quit smoking two and a half weeks ago and turned down the drinking, I can really feel the difference!"
