"Lance Armstrong will on Sunday become the first ever cyclist to be honoured with the title of Overseas Sports Personality of the Year by the BBC, procycling can reveal.
Armstrong was presented with his trophy last month in Texas, weeks before the winner of the prestigious award was due to be announced in London, and with bookmakers still taking bets on the outcome of the poll. Previous winners of the overseas prize include Muhammed Ali, Michael Johnson, Tiger Woods and Steffi Graf.
Britain?s tragically-deceased Tommy Simpson is the only other cyclist to have received a similar accolade. Simpson was voted the overall winner of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 1965, the year of his world championship victory in Lasarte, Spain."
