CLUB TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP - SUNDAY - 3rd AUGUST

Postby DenisG » Mon Jul 21, 2003 5:31 am

Its now just two-week?s until the ?Agreeable? track event of the season,

ADDISCOMBE CYCLING CLUB
CLUB TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS 2003
on Sunday 3rd August
at Herne Hill Velodrome, Burbage Road, SE24.
First race at 2.00pm.

Just to remind Agreeables what we have done. Four local clubs, Addiscombe CC, Bec CC, Brixton CC and De Laune CC have pooled resources to stage our own club track championships. It will be the first time for a number of years that we have had sufficient trackies to run such an event.

On the day there will be three Addiscombe events, (maybe four championships) a two-lap sprint, a 4k Team Pursuit and a 5-mile scratch race. The reason there may be four championships is that there is a ladies sprint trophy but at this point I have only one lady entrant.
Each club will stage its own races, with the exception of the final race of the day, the 5-mile scratch, where all riders will be on the track together. So for the Addiscombe sprints and team pursuit there will only be Addiscombe riders on the track.

The Races
2-lap Sprint ? these will be run in heats of 4/5 riders, with the first two in each heat going through to the next round until we get to 4 riders for the final.
Wouldn?t it be just fantastic if we could stage a separate woman?s final? So come on ladies, don?t make Tamar compete with the men.
4k Team Pursuit ? teams will consist of 4 riders and the team time will be that of the third member of the team to cross the finish line. There is a club record for this event and hopefully at least one of the teams will attempt to set a new record on the day. So come along and give them your support.
We can use 4 stations on the track for this event, so unless there are more than 4 teams, this will probably be a single race.
5-mile Scratch (20-laps) ? the final event of the day. All riders will be on the track together. The judges will sort out which rider from each club crosses the line first.

The preliminaries have all but been taken care of and we have begun the countdown to what will be a fantastic day.
Insurance has been arranged and bikes are available for hire (@ £2.50) on the day. The programme begins at 2.00pm and will probably finish just before 6.00pm.
The entry fee will be £3 per rider for the day (this includes the insurance).
Remember that racing will be taking place all afternoon i.e. the track will only be available for warm-up before 2.00pm. So please make your own arrangements, e.g. Turbo-trainer etc.

What I need now are NAMES, competitors and helpers. I need to have these by Wednesday at the latest so that I can allocate numbers, determine the riders for the various heats, publish a race programme and assign duties.

The names I have to date are as follows (if you are not in there and you want to compete, let me know by Wednesday ? the same applies if you know of someone who wants to take part and has not let me have a name).

COMPETITORS

Andrew Montgomery Steve Dennis Mark McLaughlin
Ajay Khandelwal Paul Tunnell Keith Knight
Steve Bayless Terry Hill Tamar Collis
Robert Fallon Aodan Higgins Eric Hall
Sylvain Garde Ramon Labiaga Neil Robertson

Where are those who came to Calshot?
Get yourself into a team ? don?t wait for someone to ask you.

HELPERS

Keith Knight Dave Palmer (timekeeper) - will need at least one more)
Dan Benson Tamar Collis Robert Fallon
Glen Watts Aodan Higgins Andy Spriggs
Paul Tunnell (who will be in charge on the day)

So to ride or help just get back to me on the forum.
Any queries, just stick them on the FORUM, I shall be monitoring messages.

Denis,
Count me in as a competitor (and as a helper when not competing).
Cheers,
Jon Hemming

P.S. What pursuit teams have people got sorted so far?

I thought I was just doing the pursuit. I'd rather not do the sprint thanks all the same. Looks far too damn scary. Cannot track stand to save my life. Cannot sprint either come to think of it! Pursuit and any marshalling that needs doing is fine by me. Might be persuaded to do the scratch but would be happy to miss it if needed for marshalling type stuff.

I'll race but not sure which race to do - can't do the team pursuit as I'm not in a team.

Could try the sprint though I've never done that before and can't do any of that mega slow stuff on the first lap that we saw on Good Friday. Not that fast either !
I wouldn't mind trying the scratch race if there are other women doing it.

Can I decide on the day ?

Denis, I've mailed to say aye to helping.
Could be tempted to try racing - see how me & track bike get on before I consider racing.

Dennis

Just in case you didn't get my email, please put me down to race.

C

PS When I said I would ride in all of the events, I didn't mean to include the ladies sprint.

The big day is almost upon us now and the final arrangements have all but been completed.
Rick (Bec CC), the co-ordinator of the events, is still a little undecided as to whether to include an additional 'FUN' race/s, say a 'devil'? Much will depend on numbers from the other three clubs.
It appears that, yet again the 'AGREEABLES' may be the largest of the four clubs taking part on the day. Who would have believed that twelve months ago?
My thanks to all who are going to ride or help (particularly those who are going to bo both). You will contribute towards making the day a great success for the club.
Many of you are aware that I should be on holiday on the day however, circumstances have conspired to make me to alter those plans. I may now be able to attend, at least for some part of the day.
In any event, Paul Tunnell will be in charge (and competing) on the day. So please give Paul all of your support.
As per my orinigal posting, the first race will be at 2:00pm and the track will be available for warm up beforehand. I image most would like up to an hour. Please note that it may not be possible to warm up on the track itself after the first race.
It would be great if helpers could arrive as close to 1:00pm as possible and just muck in where needed. We have one official time keeper in Dave Palmer (thanks Dave) however, Ron Beckett of the Bec CC will be bringing along some extra watches, so if there are any others amoung you with time keeping experience, please ask Paul to point you towards Ron (you can't miss him).
I imagine that most help will be needed as pushers (and please do make yourselves available to the other clubs for this). Help will also be needed in setting up beforehand and clearing up afterwards, so again please just help where you can and don't forget Paul.
Finally my special thanks to Paul for taking on the main task on the day, I really do appreciate it.

Great work Denis, the 3rd will be a platform to launch ACC as a serious track club.

What a fantastic afternoon!
Thanks to Denis and everyone else involved in organising, timing, whistleblowing, pushing, cheering etc for making it such a great success. Thanks also to everyone who turned up to ride and made it look like an Addiscombe event with guest appereances by Bec & De Laune, and congratulations to the new club track champions and record holders.

P.S. did anyone else catch a bit too much sun? I've got a stupid looking red V down my chest from sitting around with my zip undone.
