Very Draughty!

Postby Steve B » Thu May 15, 2008 9:30 pm

Wow, that was a buzz. :D

Cycling home this evening down the A217, an ambulance pulled out from a turning in front of me at the perfect moment for me to jump in behind it. The cars in front of it disappeared and no cars were behind me, so I made the most of the opportunity . I kept to the left to see what was ahead - all clear. We were doing 30mph and it was easy. Then the ambulance accelerated so I moved to the middle and 'CRIKEY', it was as if someone had strapped an engine to my back wheel  I got sucked along at 35 - 40 mph for over a mile, Fantastic :D.

Now children, don't try this at home, as it very danderous . But hey, it's a whole lot of fun :D, and anyway if you're going to crash in to a vehicle, you couldn't choose better than an ambulance 8)

That was proper shadowing

Quality drafting Shadow. I like people carriers for the large flat back and loads of glass to see the road ahead through, but ambulance is something else :D . I'd love to have seen the faces of the drivers who'd pulled aside to let you, sorry the ambulance, through.

Unfortunately the ambulance wasn't on an emergency. Now that would have been fun, eh

Nice and great fun! what a vehicle to pick too. :)

Did it last year behind my wife in the car who just kept going faster and faster, after a few miles finally pulled away at about 45mph. Said it was great fun drafting you there but why did you accelerate away like that.... "oh I wondered why you were so close and going so fast I thought I was holding you up." :P

an old colleague of mine told me that when in the RAF, stationed in germany, a group from their cycling club did an organised draft behind a military truck all the way back to their UK home base, pretty much non stop at ridiculous speeds on autobahns/autoroutes... :D

Keith and I had a cyclist behind us when we were travelling in the Alps in 2002. We were in a big camper - a 5m long Fiat Ducato, and this guy was drafting us coming down an alpine pass from somewhere or other.

Keith was driving and being an ex-motorbiker he knows how to take a straight line through the bends, even in a camper van. So we were having great fun going hell for leather  .

Clocked 90kph on the van speedo. Wrote it on a paper and stuck it on the window for the rider to see. He pointed to his cycled computer and said 'I know'.

You are right, Paul, women eh! :D

That reminds me of the truck-drafting scene in classic cycling film Breaking Away with the truck driver counting out the speed on his fingers out the window... 8)

NB I am tempted to source a "Cutters" jersey at some point

Hmm wouldn't he have got "blown back" too much when he pulled out for the speed check? Having drafted the occasional bus you really have to keep in the mid three quarters to avoid getting buffeted.
and who else instinctively shouted "KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE ROAD DAMNIT" when he was gazing into the mirror? :D
